School has binned my daughters belongings

Hi all, I am having problems with my daughters school (primary school).

My daughter forgot to bring home her PE kit and lunchbox/bag on the day they broke up for the summer.

I was a bit pee'd off thinking of the smelly lunchbox I was going to be presented with went she came home with it on Thursday but that was all.
She returned home from school on Thursday without the kit or lunchpack saying they cant find it. (checked lost property etc..). I called up the school to be told "we tell everyone here that anything left is thrown away" Now if it were just her lunchbox I wouldn't be so mad but we're talking trainers, shorts and T-shirt.

The kids are made to leave their PE kits at school all the time incase they feel like doing outdoor games at short notice etc so Chloe wasn't in a routine of bringing it home.

I've spoken to the school again today asking to see the head teacher so I can try to sort this out but the receptionist again asked me to let her look into it more so I agreed.

Though I'm livid at the thought of them binning personal belongings and the £35 pair of trainers that were bought for her should I expect them to reimburse me ?

Am I being unreasonable ? Her PEkit was on her personal 'peg' with a plainly labelled lunchbox. (name and class plastered all over it)It's not like they couldn't find the owner after the holidays.

What would you do ?

Many thanks for any help/suggestions

I hope they do reimburse you but last year my daughters pe bag went missing from her peg(its left at her primary school) and i had to replace it all.I would prefer it if the kit came home each time with her

    hope you sort things out

White Raven the school was not closed all summer - what prevented you from calling into the school to collect her belongings?

We do not have a lost property bin - if an item is not collected within 24 hours it goes - we don;t have enough room to hoard all those items that children can;tbe bothered to look after.

As regards PE bags etc................. well if they aren't taken home then they are thrown as well ................... parents and children are given enough opportunities in the last few days of term to make sure they have everything and children are constantly reminded to make sure they take everything home.

Not sure how old OP duaghter is but if in infants then teacher and TA's make sure all pegs are cleared. If in Juniors they remind them and remind them and if Year 5 or 6 they have to learn pretty quickly when they get to secondary school.

Sometimes you just have to accept that these things happen and that your offspring are the ones at fault

As far as I am aware they were indeed shut up for the 6 week holiday.

Very unlikely that the school was closed - the caretaker is usually around for at least some of the time and even in the small school i work in - the school was open every single day, either with workman, staff, caretaker and at least one day a week with me and the office manager.

I'd be very suprised if a caretaker (at least) was not on the premises. I'm not in any way agreeing with the actions of the school, but it sounds like you made no effort to retrieve your property.

Oh I know my daughter's at fault for forgetting to bring her things home, I just find it unreasonable for the school to throw out clothes and virtually new trainers.
When the lost property box was checked there was only a single item in there so it's not like they had no room to keep hold of it for her.

Like I said in my first post, I wouldn't mind so much had it just been her lunchbox but I cant afford to replace trainers.

That's a bit harsh. What about if the parent can't get to the school to collect the stuff due to work commitments or whatever?

I'm sure glad my kids don't go to your school.
