    Of course H&S doesn't decree toilet roll middles are unsafe - only that children shouldn't use ones which are not clean!
  • For DIYers who use a metalwork vice:

    Cut the tops from the box with the folded bit, cut to size, mine are 3"x2" then you can use them as vice "clamps" or clams" (I can't remember their correct name) The thick cardboard prevents the metal or whatever you have held in the vice from getting marked by the jaws. The cardboard hinges at the crease and so lies flat in the vice.

    I cut out shapes to fit exactly round the brass letterbox, door handle and number (this is easiest done before the items are fixed to the door). You can then get right to the edges when polishing your brass without getting Brasso all over the door itself.
