Great “What to do with an old Cereal Box?” Challenge: Radical recycling...

  • In the kitchen at my work there are loads of boxes of healthy cereals on top of the cabinet. I have taken in an empty box of childrens cereal (full of sugar and they type that makes the milk go chocolately) and left it there. My manager, who is a health nut, went round questioning everyone to find out who was bringing unhealthy cereal in. Classic.
  • When my chicken coop arrived and I realised it didn't have a nesting box I tried many things to temporarily give my girls somewhere to lay their eggs. Eventually I cut a large hole in the side of a cereal box leaving a lip around the edge so the couln't kick out all the contents and they immediately took to it as a place to lay! Also it's really handy just to put the whole lot in the compost when it gets a bit mucky and start again!:T

Put saved boxes over heads of those you suspect are just too 'flaky' for your liking.
  • It's not just cereal boxes. there are so many cardboard items around and recycling facilioties are not always to hand. I am fortunate enough to have a wood burning fire with a back boiler. I have an enjoyable winter time seeing the cardboard disappear, keeping warm and heating the hot water. It's what would happen in a landfill site but I cahanel it faster through my fireplace. - Graham Hobbs

Landfill sites do not burn waste. They are holes in the ground (properly lined to avoid pollution) and the operator simply buries the waste. After time it decomposes and produces methane that is turned into electricity and sold back to the grid.

Not the box itself, but the waxed paper inner bags are ideal for keeping cheese in the fridge or freezer , and also for wrapping packed lunches in.
  • My parents (both in their late 80s) keep their Christmas decorations in a Scotts Porage Oats box that has a 'Coronation Peep-Show' of Westminster Abbey printed on it, so its 56 years old. Anyone beat it for long-term use of a cereal packet?
  • The idea of using them to post items sold on Ebay and other cheaper auction sites is a good one, but I would advise only using them for non fragile items, myself I make a box out of them only for books. Make them to fit exactly and you also save on postage costs.
It's about time everybody stopped paying Ebay fees and moved to other auction sites.:T

My mum and me flatten them and donate to the local play school which we live near.

They cut them up to all sorts of shapes for crafts for the pre-schoolers, and are always in need of more boxes.

    Waste not want not!

Cereal boxes can be reused for many things such as crafting with the children. Makiing shapes for early maths, making face masks, chickens for Easter. Junk modeling with glue.

Home made cards for postal competitions

    Shopping lists

    Templates for quilting

opened flat you can use instead of paper to paint models on.

cutting up from the base a few inches you can make drawer deviders.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.
