Hi,
I'd appreciate some advise.
Which is the best primer for timber - wood Exterior windows.
We have removed as much of the old paint as possible. About 70 % is bare wood now.
These are quite old windows. Some parts the condition not that great.
After using the primer, which is the best undercoat - top coat paints .
Want to to do gloss white finally..
There are so many makes of Primers.
Has anyone used Zinsser Cover Stain or Tragund . I have been told these are very good. Also that after using these, I only need to use the top coat gloss. Is that correct.
Thanks

Hi Jm, Im a joiner by trade make and fit windows , work with good time served decorators. Most of them use the Dulux weathershield system which consists of 1:Preservative primer(blue/green tinted clear) which as it says is a preservative as well as a primer.2.Undercoat they usually do 2 coats .3.Gloss one coat.
Its a good system ,if you buy it from Brewers decorators merchants, trade paints etc it has an 8yr warranty,if you buy it from Homebase or B&Q it has 5yrs, not sure why though.
Some will also use Sadolin Supadec which is waterbased and microporus they say thats a good system, again it has a primer which is clear....I have heard of Zinsser but never used it.
Hope that helps...........0 -
Hi Leveller,
Thanks for the post.
Just wondered how it compares with Johnstone's paints which is recommended in ' Which magazine '.
Thanks

Hi JM, guess its down to personal preferance,Johnstones seems ok to me, steer clear of the water based(acrylic) it really is rubbish and that goes for most makes, the problem with it is that it doesnt soak in the timber,it just sits on the surface, NO painters worth their salt use acrylic..The only waterbased paints the good ones I know use is Sadolin Supadec which is microporus so it allows the timber to breathe ,expand and contract withour cracking.
Like I say I'm not a decorator , but I have used Johnstones oil based primer and it seems ok.0 -
Hi Leveller,
Thanks for that tip on avoiding acrylic paint.
I have had another look at Zinsser web site . The Cover-Stain seems to be oil based

I wonder if it is as good as it is making out to be !
Thanks again

A big vote here for Dulux Weathershield system, have used it for years and out performs the rest (although expensive!)
To give it that bit of extra durability apply a second coat of gloss to the windows within 24 hours of the first coat.0 -
Weathershield here, too.0

Hi,
I had another look at
Dulux Weathershield Exterior Preservative Primer+
it contains Biocide.
http://www.dulux.co.uk/products/info/weathershield_exterior_preservative_primer_plus.jsp
Not too keen on using such chemicals.
More info here :

Thanks

in my honest opinion as a decorator i would steer well away from johnstons ... its cheap and well .. lets just say you pay for what you get!0

So none of the food you eat has been farmed with any pesticides? Impressive.0
