My Mum lives in Berwick, and when we up there in the summer I gave her a lift to the vets so she could get the cats claws clipped.

£6.50 was all it cost, I was stunned. The receptionist laughed when I said it was so cheap, and said she wished I could stand on the door and tell all their customers that!

Not sure how much my vet is, although it is a PDSA vet so I know its cheaper than the private ones. Touch wood neither cat has had anything but annual jabs doing for a long time.

I've also got a foster cat who has had a ot of stuff done recently, including 3 ops on her teeth, but the RSPCA pay for that, so again, no idea of cost.

The best thing about my Mums vet is that it is the only 1 in the area, but they are obviously not abusing that and charging the earth, and are charging very reasonable prices. They still must be doing alright, as they've had purpose built premises recently built that they've relocated to.
  • thats great prices OP a few months ago i had to take my cat to the vet as he was weeing blood, 1st vist they decided it was cystitis (which they said is unusual for a male cat under 1 yr old) , gave him an AB shot and a painkiller shot, that cost me £93, had to rush him back in 1 night as he had got worse and just to see the vet at that time was £120 if it had been after midnight it would of cost £150 before any treatment, he had to stay in overnight so they could try get a urine sample, that visit cost almost £300 inc the metacam and cystaid he was sent home with he is now on cystaid long term which was another £70

luckily he was insured so i only had to pay the £60 excess, without insurance i dont know what i would of done :(
  • We got charged £195 just for them to open the surgery on a Sunday to see one of our cats. That was before even talking to us or seeing the little mite.

Just to add a bit of perspective here. Out vet is an old fashione primarily big animal vet and the surgery is a garden shed attached to his house so we aren't paying for any fancy premises.

He reminds me of our first vet in his plus 4's many moons ago. Who would in this day and age not win any prizes for his bed side manner but was a pragmatic no nonsense type of vet.

With a vet like ours that is why I'm not a pet insurance fan but when he retires we might need to rethink that.
  • My vets is £50 charge straight away before they see my dog out of hours, which we needed when she had a stroke and of course I dont mind paying.

My dog had a really bad experience with a groomer cutting her nails when she was a pup and wont let anyone touch them, so £24.50 to get the vet to sedate her and cut them.

Last time we took her to my vet, they dislocated her back leg when they were doing her nails (blooming wanted to actually kill them, she was in soooo much pain)
they had let the trainee nurse cut her and she somehow managed to do that?!?!
so anything that needs done can only be done by Chris the owner and excellent vet btw and no one is allowed to even pick her up. As he said she gets VIP treatment now, but she is petrified of going there. Must say though, everything that needed doing, x-rays, tests, dog crate for when she came home, her staying there for 3 nights, all that was covered by him and we werent charged a penny, and normally they are really dear.

My sister goes to another vet in Longniddry and they are really cheap and excellent.

    xx

I use the same vet, he is truly marvellous and nothing is ever a bother. :D He's :A

We've used him for all types of large and small animals and he is kind, patient and helpful but isn't afraid to refer animals to the Vet School for specialised treatment. I think he should be nominated for an MBE as he does such an outstanding service.

However posters who think that this price for this area is the norm it's not. In stark contrast are other vets in the West/ Central Scotland with very high prices.

I've only been to the vets twice so far plus had 2 free phone consultations with the vet.
Had to get wormer medicine and pro-kolin prescribed on those visits and the two visits combined were under £35 altogether. Never had to go for anything serious.

Im down South, in fact if i was any further South i'd be in the sea! And the prices here are much much higher.

Even before they look at your pet its about a £30 consultation fee, for dogs, less for cats and small animals and thats in surgery time.

Thankfully never needed a out of hours visit but dread to think.

Most recent vets bill for me, was boyfriends cat, nearly £90 for a full set of blood tests, including liver function. Her boosters are normally about £50 although we do get a health check and nails trimmed at same time.

    I am jealous-very!

TBH I would expect other vets in our area would charge similarly but just that we are very lucky with the service provided by our vet.
Does anyone know how to nominate him for a New Year honours?
