I would understand if the DVD was not sealed.  But it was still sealed in the original HMV shrink wrap and accompanied by a receipt.  At most other large stores there would have been no problem giving a refund.  Anyway I did eventually get my money back but only after a load of hassle.   :-/

  • I came up against this a few weeks ago. Hadn't heard anything about it till then. It seems over a year ago HMV changed it's policy on account of 'tougher market conditions' (or so I read). The only options now are to exchange the item for a same or higher priced item within the 21 days, or if the new item costs less you are given 21 days to use up the differance or it goes in HMV's pocket.

No Refunds, unless the item is faulty.

My Mum and myself were both on the lookout for a DVD before christmas for my Dad. We both happened to buy the title on the same day, one of which was several pounds cheaper than HMV. So the obvious thing would be to return the sealed higher price item to HMV.

When she asked for a refund, the answer given was 'We don't give refunds". After a little while the guy decided he would look into giving a refund as she'd minutes before hand purchased goods worth more than the returned item.

I feel a bit let down by HMV to be honest, and it puts me off going out my way to go there now. I'm not one for returning lots of items, infact I could count on one hand the total number returned to them by myself and I buy a fair bit.

As for HMV.co.uk you are still covered by the distance selling regulations, so I beleve the cooling off period still applied. A few weeks ago I mistakenly ordered a duplicate CD from them and there was no problem at all in returning it, even by a freepost address.

The only way round this I can see is to somehow argue the goods were not fit for the purpose intended. Although buying a duplicate is probably not a good enough reason. I have read of someone taking this rute claiming the disc is not compatabe with his PS2 or something. This would probably take it beyond a simple store visit though, and into letter writing.

Not top dog for music for me anymore. Roll on CD-WOW!

As I only really use HMV for Single shopping, does anyone know of a good place to buy the few decent singles each week. Thanks.

John, why dig up a thread that was started 5 years ago, first thing if you had opened the headphones then that may explain why you cant get a refund on them due to H&S reasons, have a read of this site about getting a refund but i think your chances are slim as you opened the headphones

    Hi,

You are not entitled to a refund just because you have changed your mind ...

Why have you opened a 4 year old post?

    *&^% me!

    Read the post above.

Everyone else, do some ^&*%ing research before you buy something, then you won't need a refund or exchange.

Quick hide, it's the forum caretaker!
If you want to rant about HMV, and let's face it there are many reasons why you would, what difference does it make whether you do it in an old thread or start a new one? If I were the OP I'd be more p!ssed at my friend for giving me bad advice but I'd have thoroughly researched beforehand the best 'phones to get if I was spending that amount of money on them.

(and hypocrytically, lately, HMV now only accept returns as refunds if shopping with them online, so why all the aggro from their staff if going to the high street
It's not hypocritical at all. Distance Selling Regulations stipulate a statutory right to return goods bought over the internet, so HMV are only discharging their statutory duty in allowing refunds from their website. No such obligation exists on the street, and rightly so. You should take some responsibility for your own actions and check that the product you're buying is the right one before you hand over your money. You're ranting at length about HMV here, but ultimately you only have yourself to blame.

First off I am new here and can I please greet you a hello!

Secondly, I only responded to this old thread as google pointed me here by accident after I looked for related info and discovered this great place for the first time today and it is relevant to us all to have good customer service and this is why I registered here and shared. Surely it is still a relevant topic regardless of age (and hypocrytically, lately, HMV now only accept returns as refunds if shopping with them online, so why all the aggro from their staff if going to the high street?).

Thirdly, I never stated I ever opened the packaging and therefore I did not, okay now? :)
I have worked in retail most of my life so I am not as thick as you presume!

No, my friend could tell by looking at the specs on the back that they were the wrong frequency required and then when I returned they sadly had zero large closed cup types left to buy.

first off, hello and welcome to the forums
thirdly i guessed that you had opened the packaging, i never said you were thick,
so was the friend who was with you when you bought them the same 1 who looked at the headphones when at home, why did he not look at the specs in the shop
