I was looking at silver coins (Britania's to be exact) but was put off because they're subject to VAT, unlike gold coins. Certainly as an investment they're not too great because you're already 15% down on the sale price. The site I was looking at said that second hand silver coins are VAT free but that thery were difficult to get hold of and their quality was not guaranteed.
