How much are carbon monoxide detectors these days? I'd recommend any house with gas has one. Buy it yourself and take it with you when you move.

Point of information: I had a carbon monoxide detector placed near the boiler and it picked up nothing. The poisonous gas was something else and also smelled differently from carbon monoxide.

That reminds me of the time when I told one of my tenants that I didn't need to get a gas safety certificate he went beserk at me calling me all sorts of names that completely ruined any chance of a good landlord and tenant relationship.

since the inception of LGSC the amount of deaths from gas poisoning in rental accommodation has plumeted (and one is too many) - generally speaking more folks now die from cold than gas - which is why there is so much emphasis on insulating properties.

It's disgraceful in this day and age that people die from cold, do you know what the numbers are?

I would contact your local authority department which deals with (private) lettings. They could help you here and should know about landlords like this.

It is a worry that landlords who don't bother too much with rules and regulations are ones who are likely to cause you problems in the future.

In 2007/8 there were 25,000 more deaths in the winter compared with the summer months and this year is expected to be worse.
the Local Government Association said the coldest winter in the last 20 years was in 1995/6 when 40,000 more people died than during the summer, and there are fears the death toll could be similar this year.

Your approach seems a bit cavalier. The landlord is required by law to be able to produce a gas safety certificate. Those were preventable deaths. A "few people" doesn't sound important when it is no one you know; those "few people" were loved and useful members of their family and society.

I suggest that the OP Googles "gas boiler deaths".

Of course the LL should have to have the device tested. Of course a death from defective equipment is tragic.

But the chances of the OP dying in these circumstances is tiny compared with other risks they will face in their everyday life and to needlessly scaremonger is not helpful to them or anyone else. They asked 'How dangerous is it to live in a house with no gas safety certificate?'. To suggest that it is very dangerous is wrong.

I don't follow your logic. For all I know, had I had the thing tested 11 months before, some early signs might have been picked up.

Why didn't you? Are you one of the many private owners who don't bother with these things? I have my boiler serviced every year but I do recognise that like a car MOT it can only guarantee safety on the day of the inspection.

Thanks, more should be done about this, it's just not right in this day and age people should be dying just because of winter (sorry for going off topic OP)

Did you know that about 4000 people a year need hospital treatment as a result of electrocution/injuries and that about 50 people a year die?

Why arent LLs req'd to provide an electrical test cert or are they?

Also how many people must get burt from hot water that is too hot?

    No testing for that either.
