    Evening!

I agree - all the work that goes into becoming debt free IS like another job. It is not simply a case of setting up a standing order or a direct debit to pay off a loan or a credit card, it is about making more and spending less - all of which takes focus, time and effort......

I very definitely think of it as a second job. I used to go and work in a bar a few hours a week as a second income, but the reality is that everything else "MSE" is just as important.....it is just an irregular "income" rather than a set hourly rate or salary.

  • thank you Hypno for your reply. It's jolly hard work, and generally lack stickability, but as have been doing "passive thrift" for the past year, and steadily paying off, feel ready to "step up to the plate" and go for a more full on aggresive-thrift approach! And last year as was runnng a business as well, had really no time, but have a little more now, so think can cope with all the extra effort it takes.

But, confession, just been out and spent £23 on an outfit from Fat Face - but was massively reduced, and have decided they can double as work clothes as tired of trying to run two wardrobes, so should be investment purchase for autumn (maybe). Also had very minimal spending all week, and as budget can run to some treats, tend to save up my spending for Saturdays now, rather than whenever I wanted (previously).

Also bought 4 nice magazines for 80p in a charity shop, and a pair of fabulously vintage-looking-still-sealed -in-packet Wolford tights, probably from the 70s, in same shop. Going to bung them on ebay and see what happens! Won't recoup my Fat Face outlay, but am afraid I need to spend sometimes to feel human, so not yet fully reformed MSE but, better than was.

Also none of this impacts on my DFD anyway, just means I lose small opportunities to get there quicker, but you've got to live too, haven't you?

Hope all good with peeps in diary land this fine day

  • Hi :D £23 on a fat face outfit sounds like a good buy!:p.
I love magazines i havent seen any in the charity shops around here!
I agree to that debtbusting is like another job i have just finished listing more books. My husband takes them and posts them for me though!:D
Was going to throw some choc santas i just found out but have meled them and done fruit fondue!!:j yum!
  • BTD, fondue sounds delish!

Am a sucker for mags myself - this was 4 copies of Psychologies which Mrs R likes but doesn't normally buy. But as am bit of a mag addict, tend to use my Tesco vouchers for them - depending on what you get, about £8 in vouchers gets you a year's sub. So we get Livingetc, Coast, Marie Claire, Kick, Runner's World, Good Food and BBBC History, so have something for everyone! And then we pass onto friends who often do the same in return. V thrifty!

Had rare shopping trip alone with OH this pm, who bought himself a much-needed new jacket from Japer Conran - but in the bargain basement in Debenhams. Saw a v nice one for me, pefect size (am a petite so can't always get what I need), pefect cut. Originally £80, now £15.....but the shop closed before could get my purse out - which was just as well, given the earlier spending. So, think my thirft angel was smiling down and stopping me doing something might regret.....but they will be open again tomorrow.....

Anyway, have decided might start treating some shops as a sort of dress agency - you know, buy something, wear it carefully for night out, keep tags on, take it back....appeals to my naughty side.

thanks beanielou, are you trying to encourage me?!

hhmm, anyway, have thought this through rationally and....decided am probably going to go back and get the jacket. it IS a great price, and with the two FF things bought yestrday, will form updates to my winter wardrobe, for relatively small outlay. as MSE says, it's about being savvy as well as paying back my debts, and this won't be adding to them, so am resolved. it shall be done.

plus my ebay listings end today, and still have a few to put on, so will have dammned well EARNT that jacket!

  • Did you get the jacket??????????;)
  • In which Mrs R feels a little bit guilty, but a big bit satisfied.....

    So, a weekend update:

Today, avoided farmers market even though they had the sweetest little pumpkins, which would have looked great in my hall in this vintage enamel dish i have...so that was a saving....and i've shopped at LIDL so should avoid an online shop this week....and some of my ebay has sold and some is finishing soon...and i've worked very hard in the house, doing loads and loads of chores, decluttering (inspired by Hypno's efforts, none of it really sale-able), and cooking up a storm

So, dammit, yes, I bought the jacket too. Making £38 spent on clothes this w/e and £1.30 in a charity shop. Eek! So to recoup some of it, need to:

only let myself have £20 personal spending money when next friday rolls round

put the vintage tights i bought on ebay - you never know.....

live on what's in my purse for the rest of the week...and it's....£1.78!!

So that's my challenge for this week. And might check out what's in my money box, as want to pay that off my tesco card too, and send my ebay money straight there too

Right, off to break up some squabbling boys......

  • :hello: Mrs R

I think the jacket was a bargain!! get the wear out of it and put it on Ebay when you've finished.

I have about 90p which i intend to try and live off this week!!! Let's see how we get on then.....
    1st debt - Next [STRIKE]£583.32[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£408.71 [/STRIKE] £0 :j
    2nd debt - MBNA - £6,618.52
First in many many to go - baby steps and all that!
First lump sum to go - fingers crossed!
    08/06/09 - [STRIKE]£11,497.68[/STRIKE] NOW - £9,757.75

Ha ha - well done on having the 90p! Yes, we can do it, my £1.78 is still intact today. It has to last me til Friday, how long does your 90p have to cover you for?

Though I've had to spend £4.28 on packaging for my ebay items today, but will just deduct that from the amount that eventually winds its way to my Tesco card, so "essential outlay" rather than spending, and have some left over for future sales. Also have books currently on Amazon but not holding out too much hope there, too many things on for a penny, though mine are all in mint condish!

Going to do another trawl round the house for e-bayable stuff this week too, so am adding that to my action list for the week. Then I can decide on Friday, when I'll have some time, if I want to put it on or not.

Good luck, LMK how you get on
