Does HTC Hero update firmware automatically?

Hi all,

Having taken delivery of a new Hero :T, I have been reading alot about it on the internet. Apparently a big software/bug fix update is planned for release in the next couple of weeks. How can I make sure my phone is updated?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers Si

Firmware files are very large, they don't update themselves. If your network has an update go to the HTC site and find the section for your phone and see it there's one there.

You can also try xda-developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=508) where you can get custom firmwares. . .
  • Cheers for that Jon. Thought it would be too easy.

Think that xda stuff maybe a little too involved for me!

    Thanks Si

The trick is to read twice and flash once and if you're not sure ask they're very friendly over there. We all had to start somewhere.

Why is this android release not over the air?

Every other andriod f/w release has been. All automatic.
  • HTC modifed the firmware on the hero (hence why it has the new sense UI and exchange support). Because of that they can't do OTA updates, only the "with google" phones will do OTA updates.

Sorry but I don't have the source for where I read this, think it was on engadget somewhere.
  • Thanks all for taking the time to reply.

Jon, as the files are large I take it that it is better to download them via wi-fi not HSPDA. If so, does this mean I really am better doing through a laptop then transfer to the phone. I take it the phone connects to laptop by the usb cable that you use to connect to the charger?

    Sorry for the newbie questions!

    Cheers for your help. Si

I have had the Hero for a month or so now - the release ROM/Firmware was really 'laggy' and frustrating and needed a re-boot every couple of days to freshen it up, but after installing the Modaco custom ROM which includes a leaked firmware update, it positively flies - by far the best HTC phone I have owned and so glad to be off Windows Mobile. :j

For all your HTC Hero updates, it's probably best to go to the Modaco Android site (sorry, still a new user so can't post links):

    android.modaco.com

I think that HTC are going to try and get the official firmware update installed OTA - there are some leaked screenshots on the Modaco site.

Although it is relatively straight-forward to root the device and to shove a custom ROM onto it, some users have had problems and have bricked their phone.

Yeah, you need to download on a pc and flash from there. That's the simplest way.

No one minds newbies, if you don't ask you'll never know. I've been asking on xda about a new phone I'm getting tomorrow and want to flash. It's all good...
  • Thanks again for your replies.

I take it that when you first connect the phone to the computer it will need to load software. Is that already on the phone?

    Thanks for your help. Si

I'd have thought there would have been a cd with the phone ?

HTC's other phones are mostly windows mobile and come with a sync prog. If you don't have a cd try the HTC main site and see if there's something there.

EDIT: yeah, there's a section on the HTC site, http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=283&act=sd&cat=all there if you need it...
