Proof of Postage has been around for as long as I can remember. Perhaps you should have posted your own router. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Suggest OP visits the Royal Mail website at
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content2?catId=69800733&mediaId=80300735
and at least follows their procedure.
If you HAD proof of posting then it would be o2 who would be left "without a claim" for the £50 as they themselves had asked for it be sent that way. As others have mentioned Certificate of Posting is a VERY old service (at least 30 years) and has been FREE all along. There are pads of forms for you to write out beforehand, or else the counter clerk can do it, or else often add it onto the tillroll printout with some kinds of postage purchases.
There would have been NO VALUE when posting of getting any other form of cover as o2 had not asked for it (ie to avoid o2 asking for £50 JUST requires a PoP to reveal to o2); and anyway a (free) Certificate of Posting OR a 'Signed for/Recorded delivery' only covers to 100 x 1st class mail anyway ie £39, not £50!
As you don't have the required proof of posting that o2 asked you to obtain then o2 will be within their rights to claim the £50 off you. However you'd also be within your rights to try to reclaim upto £38 from the Royal Mail - it may or may not work but you only lose your time.0 -
Thanks for the advice, I will see what I can do.0
