Approximate Boiler Age??

Hi There,

I'm just trying to work out the approximate age of my boiler in my flat. The boiler is running fine at the moment, heat output is good and all radiators from top to bottom are lovely and toasty.

However, it would be very helpful if somebody with some boiler experience could give me either the age the boiler was produced from or even better an age estimate.

Boiler Details:

Ideal Concord WRS 240B (Installed in my flat which I now have a mortgage, however the flat was originally built by the local council to house tenants)

The heating system/cylinder is vented/in-direct.

I've heard stories about the above model being able to last a good 30 years without any problems although it won't be amazingly economical but it will work.

I'm guessing around 1987 mark but what do you experts think?

Good afternoon: could be knocking on 30 years but can't say for sure as I can't find your model on my database but if you contact Ideal, they'll give you the lowdown. I do know my OH installed these when he was a young pup (and he is an old dog now;))

I believe the Ideal Concord series of boilers took over from the Ideal Mexico series.

I have a Mexico which was fitted in 1988 which was the year they stopped production.

If you look at the sedbuk database of obsolute boilers www.sedbuk.com it doesn't list the model by the number you gave, but the concord models were last manufactured in 2002.

So I believe it could be between 1988 and 2002.

The efficiency for all the Concord models is quite good at around 77% - compared to around 90% for the latest condensing boilers that are stuffed full of electronics and seem to cost a fortune to repair.

That's better than if the earliest it could be is 1988, and hopefully early 90's.

I just wanted to gauge how much longer it might last. I'm getting a new hot water cylinder fitted later this month because by original is leaking slightly. Whilst that is being done I will add some central heating rush inhibitor to the header tank in loft and then bleed each radiator later on that day to remove any trapped air.

I just want the boiler to last another 5 years minimum, but it's being checked every year (certificates to prove it ) so I'm hopeful.

The boiler is ancient therefore not even rated on SEDBUK, possibly installed by Noah, but if treated to annual servicing could carry on for longer barring obsolescence of parts. The Ideal Concord WRS 430, for example, is circa 1982.

1982??? flipping eck, as you know my model is the 240B not the 430 does this mean it's even older? surely not?

Well It's due a service at the end of September, I'm just hoping I can get another 3-5 years out of it

Any tips to make it last longer?

Hi,

Can anybody provide a more accurate year to year production for the Ideal Concord WRS 240B.

I get all the heating from the underfloor flat for 'free' anyway and it's been very warm so if that keeps continuing I won't need to put the central heating on much, probably a few times a month.

The water part of the central heating switches comes on twice a day. An hour in the early hours and an hour in the evening to heat up the water. Is there a more efficient way I can heat the water so as to save money.

I will be going with Homeserve Plumbing & heating cover as they seem to be the best cover for the price and if your boiler is over 7 years old they give you 50& off a new boiler as opposed to british gas homecare where they do not give any discount if your boiler is over 7 years old.

Are there any more generous plumbing & heating cover which covers a new boiler if the old one is too old too repair subject to a small excess?

I'm sure Homeserve will want to establish the age of your boiler.
Pretty sure they won't take on a boiler over ten years old.

Does anybody know a company that covers the full central heating system (inc boiler) regardless of age, there has to be a few companies in the uk surely?

I can't see anything on the Homeserve website that says they won't cover boilers over a certain age.

I expect it would be very difficult for a lot of people to know exactly how old their boiler was, if they had inherited it in a house they had bought.

I would have thought that when you buy Homeserve, they will ask you what boiler type you have, and would soon tell you if that particular boiler was outwith the scope of their cover. The only rule I could see about boilers was:

The maximum permissible output of yourprivate domestic gas fired boiler is 60 kW/hr
