Night rate Storage Heating can actually work out to be as cost effective as gas, depending on many factors.

The difference is certainly much closer these days.

I was actually referring to electrical heating on a normal tariff(not with storage heating.)

However why is oil much more expensive?

Oil has been costing between 30p and 40p a litre. A litre of oil is 10.2kWh so between 3p and 4p a kWh - so how is that MUCH more expensive - even than storage heating?

I would also dispute that storage heating can work out to be as cost effective as gas other than in exceptional circumstances.

Bear in mind that some of the heat from storage heaters is usually wasted - either through the night or during the day. For most people if you need heat during the day, you run out in the evening.

Also you pay a premium for the peak time electricity.

120 m2 house with electric underfloor heating, no gas/oil using solar water heating with backup immersion heater.

Overall household electric and gas £384 so I would say electric can be cheap to use as a heating source however this is dependent on a number of factors
