How did your child end up with their hairstyle?!

My son is 6 and from young has hair that grows upwards and outwards!
So i've always cut it myself with the trimmers - number 4 all over. This has since become a no.3 all over cos it never really looked as neat with a 4!
Over the school hols i let it grow a bit, and it seems to be getting slightly tamer, but still looked a mess IMO so i cut it no.3 again. My sister reckons i should have styled it, but i have no idea how, and i don't think it'd suit him cos i'm so used to seeing it cut short!
I've seen other boys with various styles, including mullets lol. I just wondered if everyone else's hair just 'falls' into it's own style, or how you decided to start giving a short back and sides, for example?

My sons always went to the barber with DH - a couple of times they had a 3 or 4 all over, usually they had clippers round the sides and back, scissors on top. DS1 tried it a bit longer for a while but get fed up with it, and DS2 is in cadets so has to keep it short.
Once DS2 chose a no 3 all over on the first day of the holidays. He cried when he got home because he hated the way it seemed to change his face, but by the time he went back to school it was fine....that's the great thing with hair: Even the most severe cut is bearable in a few weeks!

My son's hairstyle was determined by the size of pudding basin that would fit over his head - until he was 12, at which point he decided that he didn't want his hair cut any more.
His school were fine with that so long as he tied it back in a pony tail. He's 22 now and has had waist-length hair for some years.0 -
I have always taken DS (nearly 7) to the barbers every 6-8 weeks as his head is really thick and grows quick - I would never dare to have a go at it myself tbh
He has no 3 with the clippers round the back and sides (with a tidy up of side burns) and then the top of his hair is left longer and scissor cut and then he can put some gel in at the front or just leave it and it looks nice.
When he was younger I took him to a barbers near my mum and they did a number 3 all over - it looked awful on him and really didn't suit - made him look like a little thug
Some of the boys in his class have the tram lines shaved in to their heads but fortunately so far DS has never asked so I have never had to say no0 -
lol, i don't think i'd be happy letting him grow it long
He's suddenly taken an interest in hair gel so i bought him a cheapo 22p tub to mess with over the hols and now doesn't want his hair cut short anymore cos i think his friends have short back and sides, and styled with gel on the top.
I would have to let it grow through the messy stage to let it get long enough to try it, but i just don't think it'd look v.good. Plus i would have to take him to get it done cos i wouldn't have a clue, although i did get a DVD with my Wahl clippers i could watch that lol. That woul be more MSE.
So he's starting to want a say in his hairstyle which is fair enough, but i like it short and i know best:rotfl:

My twin DD's ended up with short hair because their big sister cut it with the kitchen scissors!
However, they look quite cute with short hairMum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

So you know I'm not kidding, here's a picture from a few months ago. We'd recently cut about 4" off it to neaten it up for a job interview...

I admit, he does get through a lot of shampoo and conditioner when he's home.
I didn't have a digital camera when he was lttle, so can't show you him then - he had fine silky blond hair back then - and - well, I didn't actually use a pudding basin - but it came out looking rather like it!0 -
My 4 boys all have curly hair so they have always had it number 2 all over or curly! You can't really do anything else with it. I like it short but they have all decided they don't want it cut, so it will be afros all round soon enough!Slimming World - 3 stone 8 1/2lbs in 7 months and now at target :j0

My DS (aged 5) goes to the hairdresser I go to (he likes the pretty ladies he tells me). I let him tell them what he wants, which is normally fringe a little shorter and longish at the back. Which translates to about collar length, he ends up with something like the guys in Oasis have.
His choice, he's happy and no tears.
I see quite a few boys in the years about have proper long hair, so I'm sure he'll want it at some point in the future but he will get the same rule I had when I was a kid - you can have it as long as you look after it or it will all get loped off.0 -
It sounds like your sons hair is similar to my sons. When he was very little I left it fairly long as he had gorgeous blonde wavy hair, but for nursery I gave him a number 3 all over - it suited his face shape & he didnt look like a thug, fortunately. At primary school he wanted more of a hairstyle so now I give a number 3 to the sides and back, and have a 2.5cm attachment on the clippers to do the top so he can spike it. At times I've let him grow it a bit longer during holidays to get him past the imbertween stage. During the inbertween (messy) stage he uses quite a bit of gel to either smooth it down, or spike it all over, a good quality gel helps at this stage as it has a better hold to it. He can also wear it in curtains once its got past the imbertween stage, a lil bit of wax helps keep it in place & smooth. You cant take a step forward with both feet on the ground0
