yes, if getting 1 x 1GB, then leave the other 256meg in there...if you're on XP you'll notice a good difference in performance with 1.25 GB in there
In terms of shopping around, just make sure you match the spec of the RAM, i.e. DDR, PC2700. As long as the spec's match, you'll be ok
Oh, and crucial are available through quidco for 7%-ish cashback if you can't find any cheaper anywhere else... crucial, kingston or corsair brands.
