Laptop or Desktop?
And getting a 2 GB ram will be enough to give 2.5 GB.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740 -

Crucial website has a memory scanner which will tell you what type you need. Then look for 2 GB Ram crucial or kingston are the best brand, but for the exact recommendation we would need to know what type of memory you have.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740

- Dual Channel Support: Yes
- CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel

You will have to remove the old memory as its 2 X 256MB, The Crucial memory is around 30 pounds for 1GB so you can buy 1 and see how that goes then get another or do both, just a warning My friend bought 2 1GB RAM and it would only detect 1 GB adding the second it wouldn't boot up. Not sure why it did that.
It does seem that the motherboard is old and won't support more than 2 GB in 2x 1GB
I recoomend getting only 1 x 1GB RAM and replacing 1 of the cards first to see how the computer response cause then you have either 1.25GB or only 1GB if you get the same problem as my friend and you aven't forked out an extra 30 poundsSurvey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740 -
Are there any cheaper makes? I think I will try the 1GB first... see how it goes.. knowing me il probably blow the whole thing up pmsl.
Should I leave one of the 256mb in there?

yes leave 1 256MB in might as well unless it upsets the system
