    Laptop or Desktop?

And getting a 2 GB ram will be enough to give 2.5 GB.

Crucial website has a memory scanner which will tell you what type you need. Then look for 2 GB Ram crucial or kingston are the best brand, but for the exact recommendation we would need to know what type of memory you have.

    Currently installed memory:

    256MB

    256MB
    DDR PC2700

Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

    • Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
    • Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
    • Available Memory Slots: 0
    • Total Memory Slots: 2
    • Dual Channel Support: Yes
    • CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
    • CPU Family: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.80GHz Model 3, Stepping 4
    • CPU Speed: 2793 MHz
    • If you receive a "Memory available limited to 256MB!" message after installing more than 256MB, enter BIOS and turn OS Install to OFF. Exit saving changes.Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

You will have to remove the old memory as its 2 X 256MB, The Crucial memory is around 30 pounds for 1GB so you can buy 1 and see how that goes then get another or do both, just a warning My friend bought 2 1GB RAM and it would only detect 1 GB adding the second it wouldn't boot up. Not sure why it did that.

It does seem that the motherboard is old and won't support more than 2 GB in 2x 1GB

I recoomend getting only 1 x 1GB RAM and replacing 1 of the cards first to see how the computer response cause then you have either 1.25GB or only 1GB if you get the same problem as my friend and you aven't forked out an extra 30 pounds

Even has a reviewer that used it for a Dell Dimension
