Might be best to move things to the D: drive. Than merge your partition. Music and photos are a good and easy to move files as you only need to reset your itunes playlist.
Also is your D drive called recovery or backup. It might contain your restore files if you need to reinstall windows when it dies unrecoverably.
Also means if you do lose windows you not lose your pics and music as they are on the other partition.

You can do it with a product Acronis do but and another one called paragon do this

Not free though but not sure if they have a trial version

Have you done a search on the Techie Forum about partitioning drives?
There was a really good answer not long ago about this - I was interested and tried what was suggested and all's well.
It meant moving stuff onto the D drive so the C drive just had more room.
I moved all my documents over and I can now defrag happily.
Sorry not to be more help but its def there if you do a search.
    Good Luck.
  • What OS?

    Vista can do it.

  • I would strongly advise against merging these partitions, especially if it's a recovery partition. If you do merge, and an error occurs on the main section, you'll have no way of getting the computer up and running again, as windows CD's are very rarely shipped with computers.

I agree with Money Grabber. I have that same situation of my recovery files on the D drive. I have 320 GB drive that came with a huge C: and a smaller D: recovery. I partitioned my C with vista and added a couple of extra drive letters that will hold music and videos in. keeps the C: less cluttered with added folders of music. also means that if iTunes loses its whole list I can just add the whole drive again easily not sifting through a messy C: drive.

I used to do that with my first PC and in the end it was a right mess don't know what I lost when it came to a clean install when windows failed. navigating through a dos prompt to get to your files is a pain as they have problems with laarge folder and file names.

One question regarding the partitions, are they both on the same physical disk?, or are they different hard drives? If they are not on the same disk they cannot be merged. The reasoning behind this is that often the recovery partition is hidden on the sole drive in order to protect it as it contains all the (re)install cabs, and many have gone in with FDisk, or other partitioning tools and vaped it rendering the rescue CD a coaster. Without a full install Cd you are then stuffed.
  • If you are using Windows Vista, you can do it.

    This is how:
    1. Shrink your D:
    2. Create a new partition. let's say E:
    3. Copy the stuff on your D: to E:
    4. Delete D: partition.
    5. Merge C: with the just deleted partition.

If you are not using Vista, you need some partition management tool from a 3rd party.

    Thanks.

same physical disk , just separated, If they are 2 separate drives then you wouldn't be able too. Why not just make an E drive and then copy your music and photos too it making your system more organised and give yourself your Cdrive space back.
