    why it might be a 20 GB hard drive thats on its last legs, you can get a new one for 30 pounds.

    You don't need to pulverize it, just enough damage to stop the platters rotating.
    Then give the rest of it away intact on Freecycle to make amends for your wanton destruction...plenty of life left in a 5 year old PC usually.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Alternative would be to have one of those programs that over writes many times to the drive with rubbish, if you run it more than a few times only the most serious of criminals would have the equipment to get anything off it and then unless its got account numbers to billions it wouldnt be worth their effort and you can give the Hard drive away
