Disposing of old PC

I have a desktop PC that I no longer want. I need advice on how to clear my personal info from it before I get shot of it. Please make it easy for me cos I'm not good at this techie stuff!

There's a program called DBAN that will wipe all information from the drive.

You need to burn the .iso file to disk, there's a guid on how to do that HERE.

You will need the burning program Imgburn to burn an ISO image to disk.

Once you have the disk, put it into the old computer and restart the pc

Once your at the blue screen, use the command 'quick' and your data will be gone forever :) (you can use the command 'prng' if your paranoid but one wipe of quick is enough to render the data 100% irrecoverable)
  • Are you going to sell it or dump it? If dumping then just remove the hard drive and smash it to bits.

Good idea Taffybiker. It's about 5 years old and not working well so I'm not sure if it would be of any use to anyone?

What does the hard drive look like? Will I know what it is when I take PC to bits?

I'm not allowed thanks I guess lol

If you want to destroy the hard drive open up the hard drive case and smash the disk platters inside do it in a plastic bag so you not get shards of sharp disk all over the place.

  • Read an article recently somewhere that recommended smashing hard drive with a hammer over any other method

A hammer will work wonders on the plates. I remember when Harddrive disks were the size of dinner plates, and held 40MB
