Upgrading a mobile phone help please

Hi,
I can upgrade my mobile as from last week although my contract does not run out until 31/12/09, now if i was to upgrade can i then cancel my contract giving one months notice on 30/11/09 and still keep the upgrade?
Any advice welcome thankyou.
