I think all the things we are talking about here involve electricity & are too involved & dangerous for a non electrician.

ok , i beleive i've got the message, and should just go and buy a new one.
thanks to everyone for their help and posts!
was just hoping i could keep mine if economically repairable, but have enquired around and compressor jobs are being quoted at about £150 so not worthwhile having it repaired.
    Nice to save.

However... am still hopeful I can mend my one (but then mine is an unconventional design).

Testing whether the power is getting beyond the thermostat only requires some common sense and a mains tester http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/sea/searchresults.jsp?_dyncharset=UTF-8&howMany=5&searchText=mains+tester&x=0&y=0

Apparently the spare heating element I need (from https://www.leisurespares.co.uk) will cost about £40, but compared to a replacement fridge at about £200 it seems it might be worth it...
    Nice to save.

I have a Whirlpool larder fridge which has always been reluctant to restart after it has been switched off or moved.

This might sound silly - but plug it in, switch it on and then rock it from side to side gently - this has worked on mine for about fifteen years !
