Hello
Although Ive been using ebay for years, never had to make a claim against a seller or had anyone claim against me so am a bit dense here.
Basically bought an external harddrive on 20th july, all fine, seller stated theyd had it three months. Left pos fb for each other etc.
Anyway, yesterday for no apparent reason its stopped working and looks like the hard disk has gone kaput. I just turned it on and nothing, been through all the help pages etc.
Anyway, registered on the iomega site and its still in warranty, but I cant do anything withuot the original proof of purchase. Ive emailed the seller to ask if they have it.
Just wondering if I can make any kind of claim as its now broke, paid £70 for it and would expect more use than 6 weeks.
Any help appreciated,

You have no way of pressurising the sellerr through ebay and paypal as you are outside any paypal claim limit. As you bought second hand and I am guessing from someone registered as a private seller (please correct me if I am wrong) I would also think you are rather limited with your other actions as well.
You could consider small claims, but that might be a case of throwing more money away on it as you ar enot guaranteed any refunds even if you do win a case.
Personally I would just appeal to the seller here, see if they will make soem sort of compromise or supply original documents or such like.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I don't think the sellers liable at all. He sold it to you second hand without any guarantee of how long it would last.
It'd be very nice of him and very lucky for you if he provided you with proof of purchase but I think that's the best you can hope for.0 -
Hard drives fail, usually without warning, can't see you've got any claim against a private seller now.
NB Don't be fobbed off by needing proof of purchase for the manufacturuer, under EU law if an item fails in two years it's regarded as not fit for purpose.0 -
If you sell something as a private seller there is no come backs if it breaks after you start using it. Also the warranty is only with the person who brought it. If its sold on the warranty does not go with it. I would contact the seller and explain and see what they say.0

Try and get proof of purchase off the buyer, if that dosn't happen you could contact the manufacturer as the item would have the serial number on it, you might be lucky.0

Great stuff, I assume the company will dispose of the old hard drive, because if you bin it, your personal files can be had. If you have loads of stuff on it that you have lost, you may be able to recover by plugging it in to your computer via usb and seeing if you can get your lost files. If not the company should dispose of it safely.0 -
Basically whats on it are recorded tv shows, and photos which is what I'm most bothered about losing although most are backed up on line. is there any way I can recover these before i send it back?0

Just a few questions to see if that is possible:
1. Does the hard drive make its usual spinning sound?
2. What went wrong, ie did it just stop booting up, or was it a second hard drive for storage.0 -
It does make its spinning noise, its an iomega screenplay multimedia hd, you plug it in the tv to watch films etc, plus i stored some bits on it. Basically, the pc stopped detecting it at all, and the tv just displayed its loading screen with a no disc message0
