Here we go
made redundant - 26k - 15 years
paid off credit card
have insurance for my mortgage, but as I slightly changed it and didnt notify the insurance, they may not pay out
mortgage left about 20k
mortgage taken out in 1989
Therefore
might pay off mortgage
saw previous posted link to DWP saying about deprevation of capital.
took a copy - as an image
says you will not be depriving if you
pay off debts - credit cards - mortgage
buy a car
go on holiday
will if you give money to your sister etc
my mate went along to the dole office and they told him to keep receipts etc
nothing like that said to me.
so
If I pay off my mortgage and they said i couldnt and wont back down about deprivation, - will be seeing my MP
apart from that
what can they do?
I wont be claiming for a mortgage - unless I leave a small amount outstanding - 3k etc
If they decline me, can I appeal again? or do I starve due to my action?
Anyone know where I can buy concrete advice on these matters
Thanks

Sorry, I'm confused.
Were you made redundant 15 years ago or after 15 years? Is the £26,000 you mention your salary or your redundancy payment?0 -

will if you give money to your sister etc I think this may be your interpretation rather than absolute fact - as above can you link what you're using.

You can appeal, but if they determine that you have deprived your self of £26k they will not pay you ANY means tested benefits. They don't just say "oh well, there's nowt we can do now he's spent it, we'll have to pay him - they say tough. You made a decision, the tax payer is not picking up the tab for it.
Thanks
Like I say, we could do with a link to the stuff you're using to guide your decision.0 -
Redundant now after 15 years working there.
The money was a little wages and the rest redundancyOldernotwiser wrote: »Sorry, I'm confused.

It would be seen as deprivation of capital to pay your mortgage off or any debts off. You are allowed to pay the usual payments out of your money, but if you pay any more then it will be seen as depriving yourself of capital in order to gain public funds.Redundant now after 15 years working there.

I know which link you're talking about and it isn't straight forward as it reads. If you are in doubt of my advice in the above post then ask the DWP before you spend it otherwise you could be treated as having notional income.Hi
I saved it as a picture file - how can I upload it?0 -

They are regualtions for HB and CTB.
If you pay off your mortgage it will be treated as deprivation of capital.
Don't take my word for it ask the DWP!0 -
The key words there being "the decision maker considers reasonable"0

Yep, that's the whole point - the decision maker would look at what the Op spends it on and consider whether it was reasonable.
OP, the list you've looked at is telling you things that would not automatically be ruled as deprivation, not things that would automatically not be ruled as deprivation - if you can see the distinction.
A mortgage is highly likely to be considered unreasonable but a credit card debt on a high interest rate card might be considered ok e.g if the rate were 25% or more, then I would think it likely to be accepted.0 -

How do I ask the DWP?
So if I go ahead - when I go ahead - what will happen to me?0
