steganos3.exe seems to be a genuine program , they seem to do some password storing programs and notepad etc but unless you paid for it then it expires after 30 days , so go to Control panel then add/remove progrms and uninstall it if you did not buy it.
Can I ask if you use broadband or dial up ?? are you with BT
run hijackthis again and tick these items

thnx - will do-
steganos doesn't show on the installed progs list.
I'm with bt on dial-up.
at the risk of sounding obtuse... after ticking the items, do i click the fix checked or not, before running bleeping computer ?
i clicked on the https:registerbt.internet and this came up

ok, did not want to fix those items if you were on dial up....
you know its probably cheaper to be on Broadband these days ??
Post office do line rental/phone calls/broadband for about £21 a month free calls evening and weekends (unlike BT which is only free weekend) and free calls to mobiles at the weekend (up to 55 minutes)
you need to do some serious updates to windows that will take ages on dial up , do you have a friend with broadband who could donnload something to CD for you ??Ex forum ambassador
