The VW 2002 GT TDI 150 is incredible price until im 25 according to all sites the closest I got it "decent" Quote was Asda 3rd party fire theft with £100 excess

    £1484 a year ....

I was in tears today because £4700 for this gold with all the specs was a bargain plus it had only done 65000

I had one of these as a company car a few years back (53 reg) and it was very quick.

I can see why insurers wouldn't want a young driver at the wheel.

Incidentally the 150bhp is a GTI not a GT TDi (that is the 130bhp).
  • There is no doubt it can shift but I see it from the insurers point of view im a 19 year old who may use it for its performance.

next upgrade may be a Seat ibiza again or skoda Fabia love VW range Audi is more than out of my price range even with BG wages lol.

There are a few things where being old is an advantage and insurance is one of them. Be a little patient.

Get a cheapy cheapy car now for insurance in your own name and build up even more NCB. I was insured in my own name from 17 (albeit 35 years ago) and when I was 23 I had no difficulty insuring a Rover SD1 3.5 and a TR7 at a reasonable cost.

Andy, same for me but since we were young insurance costs have gone silly for kids.

When I passed my test as an apprentice in the mid seventies, my insurance for a Mk 1 GT Cortina was £40 which was about two weeks wages. Couple of years ago our apprentice was paying £1500+ for a small engined Metro, that worked out at about three months wages.

Similarly when I was learning my dad got me on his insurance (2l Mk 3 Cortina) for next to sod all, 20 years ago I taught SD to drive and got her on my insurance (2l Opel Ascona) for a sensible sum, 6 years ago when it was time to teach DS to drive my OH struggled to find a company who would put him on her insurance (2l Mondeo) and the odd one that would wanted seriously silly amounts of money.

Maybe it’s the downside of the cherry picking insurance companies, everybody wants the 50 year olds with a good record, (I pay £230 odd for a group 20 Audi S4) but nobody wants the kids.

Couldn't you have got them to hold and offset the deposit against a lower grouped car?

Have you looked at focus's?, slower, but much cheaper to buy and run while still looking decent and having all the cabin features.

Bought a mark one as my first decent car when i was 21 and paid £900 for "full comp" (until your 25 it isn't really fully comp anyway) insurance with 1 years no claims and 3 years as a named driver on a parents car.

I got the MK1 focus when I was 21 as well....insurance cost me £1170 with £350 excess. I didn't have any NCD at that point...this dropped to £725 with Adrian Flux this year and my renewal is coming up very soon...reckon it will be £500-600 or there abouts which is a massive drop..looking to change cars once I get my 2nd years no claims though!
