Our television has developed an anoying problem, when we turn on the power button it can take 10 minutes to actually turn on with a picture and sound. From standby it is immediate. Any one any ideas?
Thanks

If it's an older style CRT, it's probably the power supply failing.
You used to be able to get repair kits for the more common makes/models, but it's probably not worth the cost of someone taking it apart and fixing it these days.0 -

I suspect that Albert Einstein would have advised you stop switching it off and to leave it in standby.

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

If it's a CRT, then it could be the tube. Any "dragging" on the screen when it's actually running.0

Effectively there are 2 power supplies inside, one main supply and one standby supply. One or more of the components in the main supply has become faulty and only works as it warms up which is why it takes so long to start from switch on. Once running, it will continue to work ok until it is switched off and cools down.
I am sure the time it takes to start will slowly increase until one day it won't start at all.
The component itself is very cheap but cost effective repair will depend on labour charges. See if a local tradesman can offer you a free estimate.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0 -

Only teasing.
I suspect that Albert Einstein, given the matters to which he devoted his thinking, would actually have been more likely to recommend switching it on ten minutes before you want to use it.
An economist would suggest you weigh up the financial cost of leaving it in standby against the financial cost of having to replace it prematurely as a result of continuing to switch on and off the component which is failing. :undecided
An ecologist would invite you to weigh up the environmental damage of leaving it in standby against the environmental damage of an early trip to the local landfill site.
Gordon Brown would counsel you to go out and buy a new 68" one as soon as possible, putting it on your credit card even if you can't afford it. _party_
A banker wouldn't care what harm is caused to anyone or anything so long as he continues to receive a seven-figure Christmas bonus. :money:
And poor :A Martin Lewis :A will be wondering how much of his server space is going to be consumed by this debate.

My local electic fix it shop has put a sign up saying we no long fix CRT and VCRs, so looks like if independant repair guys in their little shops wont touch them its the sign its the end of the road for these devices.
But if your lucky to find one in your area, I'm sure theirs an old boy still knocking around with his shop that knows what a CRT looks like on the inside can help, If not then get an LCD tv.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740
