  • :rotfl: - at someone comparing an XJ to a Rover 75.

I don't see mention there of an XJ? Seems clear enough he was talking about the X-type.

To be honest I find the X-type nice if a little constricting inside, but a front wheel drive Jaguar is wrong in so many ways. The 75/ZT is just as nice inside with a bit more space and the chassis is actually better I find. I haven't tried the AWD X-type though.

The S-type is a size up from the X-type and 75, but I don't think its any better a car than the 75. Despite the extra size, the S-type still doesn't give as much space inside as the 75 although the seats are marginally better but the 75 has a much more useable boot.
On the road I've only driven the softer SE version of the S-type and the 75. Both cars are softly sprung to give a smooth ride, but the 75 had much better damping control which gave better ride and roadholding when pushed making the 75 the better drivers car.
The 2.5 V6 75 and the 3.0 V6 S-type petrols are hardly any different performance wise while the 75's BMW diesel isn't as smooth or powerful as the Jag's 2.7 V6 it by no means is too unrefined.

Judging by the cars you are looking at, you are not that bothered re fuel comsumption and the green issue... that makes me like you a lot!

Forget Mitsubishi unless you really want to chuck money down the drain - parts and maintenance are HUGE on them. I stand by my suggestion of a Land Cruiser - take one out for a drive, you will fall in love. The late (very late) Discoverys are ok but Range Rovers have their own problems. I don't like them from the looks point of view let alone anything else!

Re the Jag side of things, as said before, I'm ignorant on those - but steer well clear of the previous Rover suggestions.. :rotfl: If you are looking at a big luxury car (two or four seats?) - then the LS430 are kinda nice - but sometimes they have too much wood in them and look 'old mannish' - if you know what I mean. :D But they are very sumptious.

  • thanks everyone.
I need to get a new normal tyre anyway in the next month so will ask the garage about winter tyres as that would save a chunk of money even if they did cost a grand or two to do the entire car.

Look in your car handbook, it should give some guidance on the spec for winter tyres - they may be narrower or have a lower speed rating.
Previously I've had mine swapped for the winter and swapped back in spring for £10 a tyre per swap then keeping the spares in the shed. This year I've got a spare set of wheels to make things easier.

Have a search on mytyres for winter tyres in your car's size, usually theres quite a good range of them. Always worth having a google on the subject for some background reading.
I'd expect a decent set to cost about £400 fitted, then your £40 every spring/autumn for swapping.

The old XJs are superb value for money now. You'll get about 27 mpg from the 3.2 V8 (my dad used to have one), so if economy is an issue get it converted to gas. Even the 3.2 can cruise happily at, ahem, more than is respectable for such a huge car, (not sure about the V6 version though) the XJRs do demand a premium but the performance is utterly insane. 0-60 is about 6 seconds or less, and on to 187mph unrestricted. In a tank like that its just silly. But a lot of fun. Not that you'd have any need or want to derestrict it from 155.
The model with all the buttons and luxo stuff is the sovereign, or the daimler version, which is just called the daimler V8. Daimler XJR is the Daimley super V8, which is essentially an XJR sovereign with a few extra bits, like lambswool rugs and picnic tables. Most will have carphones and I believe they added sat nav around 2000.

Or if you're wanting more of a sports car, the XK8 or XKR (supercharged version) are a bit more expensive, but still within your budget and excellent value. There was an issue with something called nikasil in the engines of some of them, and as such many have had replacement steel engines, so those ones with the new engines are the ones to look out of. Although the thinking is that if the ones with the original engine have lasted this long they're probably ok, but its just something to be aware of.
I don't know so much about the XK, but it does look beautiful and is very fast.
  • Having driven a variety of 4x4's over the years, I would definatly recommend a Land Rover or a Toyota. I currently have a hilux which has 2wd, 4wd, low ratio and diff lock so will get me unstuck out of anything. My previous car was a very old freelander which cost a bomb to fix but it was always the same thing (abs sensors) and int he three years I had it, it only failed to start once. My brothers last car was a very old Dihatsu 4 trak (which I scrapped for my hilux hehe) and for the size of car, it certainly had a lot of oomph, and before that we had a Land Rover 90. It was the greatest vehicle I have ever driven, it never got stuck anywhere, the only time it broke down on me was when it ran out of deisel (oops!) and for a 20 year old car, it was a lot more reliable than some of my mates cars. It was a bit impractical though as it only had two seats!

I took a test drive in Mitsi animal as I liked the styling and practicality, it was awful, I don't normally get car sick, but the way that thing pitched and wallowed around bends was like crossing the Irish sea in a force 9 gale.

My wife has had her 2.2 diesel X-Type for a couple of weeks now and so far she thinks it is the best car she has ever owned. It is smooth, comfortable, fast and incredibly frugal on fuel. On a Bristol to London run last week I got 51mpg at an indicated 80-85mph. The equipment fit is second to none. I especially like the integrated touch screen, satnav, bluetooth and voice control of radio & aircon.

As for 4x4, that sort of money (or £1-2K more) might just get you into a diesel Subaru Legacy or Forester if you are lucky. Our Forester got me through some really tricky moments this winter when other conventional cars were floundering. With the OEM road-biased Yokohama GO30 tyres it could still climb steep hills in the snow.
