both going to be purchased 2nd hand. getting rid of toyota avensis. Im after a diesel 4x4 max budget 15k and oh is after a jag for around 10K. doesnt need to be a jag, he like an mg, but parts for them are iffy and he just wants a fun car to use when he is home.
i would kill for a shogun animal, but not sure if i would like one if that makes sense, but need a 4x4 for where i live as coming into winter ish and having to deal wtih country roads i think i would be better with one.

Kia Sorento. Plenty around, good solid reliable cars.
For the Jag, plenty of XJRs knocking around for that budget.0 -

I know zero re Jags - but would advise against the Sorento - has to be a Land Cruiser, nothing beats them.Genie

Depends what sort of 4x4 you want, Jeannie is quite right about the Landcruiser, total reliability in proper old school hardcore 4x4 form, but luxurious interiors and good to drive in a truck like way.
Several different models to choose from and you'll be looking around 4+ years old at your budget.
Remember though the most economical of them will average about 30mpg at best if used carefully, and some considerably less, but you probably already know that.
Do you want a 2 to 2.7 ton brick though or something a bit lighter?
Newer shape Hyundai Santa Fe is a very nice (and handsome) motor and will still be under it's 5 year unlimited mileage warranty, it's bigger brother the Terracan is a bit of a lump but a totally reliable and very tough motor, quite rare for some reason, and no longer sold here.0 -

Its a complete fallacy that a 4x4 (SUV, Off roader etc.) has any benefit on any road.
The only advantage a 4x4 has is off road where the increased ground clearance allows them to negotiate large obsticles (that by definition wouldn't be found on a road) and the clearance in the wheel arches allows knobbly off road tyres which allow them to plug through muddy fields etc.
On a road, a 4x4 has no advantage over a normal passenger car. The centre of gravity is higher and the weight is much greater which means it won't brake as quickly and it won't respond to the steering as quickly and it doesn't matter what the conditions are. Yes, four wheel drive has some advantages over two wheel drive in slippery conditions, but with a 4x4 the height and weight counts more against than the 4wd does for.
If you really think you need four wheel drive, consider something like a Volvo V70 AWD (Edit: newer ones are called XC70) or a Subaru Legacy. They have the 4wd but without the penalty that a 4x4 has. The diesels of both have much better efficiency than a 4x4 too, both are fairly plush inside and both will be more comfortable on long journeys. (Edit: Diesel Legacy estate may still be a bit out of budget.)
Next thing to consider is tyres. The tyres that you buy normally are known in the tyre industry as summer tyres, despite the fact that most of us use them all year round. Consider swapping to winter tyres if you live somewhere with more adverse conditions, you'll be amazed how much grip in snow and on muddy roads they give - the scandinavians have done this for many years. In fact I'll bet your current Avensis will drive better and be safer on winter tyres than a 4x4.
If you still want a 4x4 then thats fine, but it really doesn't sound as if you need one.0 -
Instead of a jag think rover 75 or whatever the mg variant was still gets smiles from drivrs and is highly rated as a second hanner..parts not really a problem and rowe , the owner of the marque , is considering entering the uk.
Any jag you get for that sort of money will be the mondeo base and or needing money spending regularly.I dont rate the s type for aging well , and the x just isnt a jag for me anyway.Numerous ford models are shared with other manufacureres that were in the ford stable , some drive better than others , and the drive is more imortant than the badge.
Instead of shogun try its brother the l2oo old mdoel double cab and tonneau. The rav4 and hilux too , being toyota , reliability is top rate as a avensis driver will already know.Have you tried turning it off and on again?0 -

:rotfl: - at someone comparing an XJ to a Rover 75.
There are plenty of XJRs and XKs knocking around in that budget. MGZT or XJR, hmmm, which would I rather have....0 -
thanks everyone.
I do like mitsubishi's and was pondering a 4x4 after last winter as i will have to drive to get to work and i have to use country roads to get to where i need to get to. ive seen oh drive the avensis in the snow and ice and it freaked me out as he seemed to have no control whatsoever over the car and after last winter it seemed to make sense to go for a 4x4, but with what rallydriver has said it seems i will be better sticking with the avensis. I need to get a new normal tyre anyway in the next month so will ask the garage about winter tyres as that would save a chunk of money even if they did cost a grand or two to do the entire car.
so that means the jag/fun car budget will jump to 20K if we are not getting rid of the avensis so that should be plenty for a decent fun car probably still in manufactures warrenty (no way would i buy brand new - looking at least a year old) hmmmm i might be able to swing a porsche
