our asda has cheap fruit and veg at about 5.30 ish hthonwards and upwards0

Talking about Christmas eve, Asda seem to do their mark downs of meat and fish earlier in the day, about 3 hrs before closing. The fruit and veg is more of end of day, but the meat and fish will all have gone earlier.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D

Last night we dropped in to the local Sainsburys at 20.30 ish, just in time to walk past a SA reducing some already-yellow-stickered items: DH picked up 6 sausage rolls for 20p (£1.49 full price) & some WeightWatchers nan bread for 10p (99p).
There was a highly misleading tannoy announcement claiming there were reduced items in the bakery: we were walking past at the time & the staff were surprised because there was nothing left as everything had been reduced (& sold) about half an hour earlier.
Usually it is just a feeding frenzy, especially if meat is reduced.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Years ago I used to do a part-time late shift for a large supermarket and my job was reductions (Oh the power of the sticker gun!).
I had to start monitoring stock as soon as my shift started and there was a little equation staff were told to use used for reducing items, such as "if it's 6pm and has a sell-by today then reduce them by 10%".
But of course it doesn't work like that does it because if stock control has gone up the spout and you've got 100 yoghurts to shift you need to get them to a price that will sell. It's no good finally putting them to 1p each at 5 minutes to closing when there is no-one left in the store.
After a while you learned what to reduce and when, maybe it's different now but there was never really a "set" time for reductions.
It was all about not letting stock go as "spoilage". Too much of that and there would be a visit from higher management. Better to sell stuff at 1p than have any item on spoilage.0 -
In my local Sainsbury's today a little later than usual - but still 2 hours before closing. I spent £8.30 - total value of the basket was £28.30....! The main savers were greengages, reduced from £1.74 to 29p because they're not a common fruit here and most people seem to have thought they were under-ripe (got 4 of those - some jam on the way!) and smoked salmon from £4.99 per pack to £1.25 - 4 of these, so that's the freezer stocked! Plus reduced bread and vegetables.
I suppose the secret is to keep an ryr out for any overstocks and hope you're there when they're being reduced!0 -
I used to work in a supermarket and perishable things like fruit, bread, fresh cakes and so on would start to get reduced about an hour/ half an hour before closing time, so the bread rolls would drop in price from about 85p to 5p!
It's probably worth having a nose about half an hour before your supermarket closes :cheesy:0 -
I was in M&S today 30mins before closing. Lots of stuff was reduced to half price, not many customers. Was hoping the SA will reduce items further but they were busy re-stocking and checking dates on items. Still good buys if it is suitable for freezing.0

I have most success in Sainsbury's on a Sunday, about half an hour before closing. Once go two "Taste the difference" Duck Breasts for £1.50 & 600g of salmon fillet for £2.0
