Cancelling sky

I am sure this has been said before but I feel it should be brought up again.

Cancelling Sky:
We used the options on their website to submit a cancellation request on at the beggining of September 2009 in which we stated the direct debit would be cancelled after the next payment as there is a 30 day notice required and the next payment was due within the 30 day period.
A rep called a few days later but could not discuss the cancellation as the account holder was not in. I asked them to call back any day after 6pm. No further calls where received.
On the 18/08/2009 we called them as we had not heard anything from them apart from a letter stating they would be invoicing us from now for the service as we had acancelled the direct debit. They claimed to know nothing about the cancellation request (weird, I got a receipt from there email system regarding the message). They passed us around a bit and then appeared to deal with the request.

Today we received a statement from Sky showing we owed them money for the service. I called to discuss the fact that we where waiting for the service to be turned off and a refund not a bill. They confirmed that they had the cancellation details had not actually processed it and it would be processed ASAP.

The attitude of the staff gave me the impression this was just business as normal so I hope this information helps anybody preparing to cancel sky to be prepared for some long/numerous waits in telephone q's.

Actually, cancelling is cheap and simple. It cost me around £1 for the envelope, paper and recorded Delivery ticket. Sky confirmed by letter a week later. I never use the telephone or email for matters like this. Too much hassle.
  • I cancelled via email and it was gone the same day. Didn't get any phone calls, but did get a letter saying I owed them over £100 because I had cancelled the contract early. We phoned up saying we did not owe them anything and they agreed and told us this letter was just send to everyone. Very misleading as it said it would be better value to stay as it was only a little bit more than the compensation for ending the contract early.
