DO you pay for an ADSL line to be installed?

Is it BT that installs the ADSL line? and do they always charge?

I can see myself emigrating to BT from NTL for telephone and Broadband, it's too expensive for me at 28 pounds a month for landline and 1mb broadband.

What can I expect to pay for a BT ADSL line installation...this carries the landline aswell right?

Will I be able to have installation free as part of a package deal?

I doubt BT will be any cheaper than NTL (28 pounds a month) so what price do other providers offer for internet (I'd stay with BT for landline for the time being eventually I'd want to cancel it and go with voip).

When you phone up and ask to have a line installed (assuming you have no BT sockets in your home), BT will ask if you want the line enabled for BB.

If there is no line there wil be a £99 connection charge, if there is, it will be done for free.

cheapest package is £11 p/m inc line rental

If you don't ask, you don't find out!

Ok but if there is a line and you ask for BB, you say the ADSL install will be free....does this mean they physically install a new line (the ADSL line) and does the ADSL line then carry the telephone aswell as BB thereby making the old twin core line obsolete?

£11 p/m inc line rental...does that include BB at what speed...any limits?

With ADSL they dont Add a specific ADSL line, they just open up the existing PSTN telephone line to carry ADSL.

If theres a BT landline at the address already then you wont need any installation charges for the landline. But as you said you have an NTL line at the moment at your address so you'll have to get a BT line put in.

The installation charges for the ADSL broadband (not the telephone line) is dependant on the service provider you go with. Some do it for free & some dont.

The £11 p/m is the cost for the line rental for a BT Phoneline only

BT are upgrading their exchanges to increase the speed of Broadband available. Speed depends on the proximity of the exchange to your house. To check this out go here:

Do you not read other posts on the forum? If you go via a BT line you will have to pay BT line rental AND a monthly fee for an ISP. Try contacting NTL telling them that you can get a much better deal elsewhere and see what they will offer you to stay.

BT's fee for the upgrade at the exchange connection seems to translate to a retail amount of about £50, but many ISPs discount this (and often a modem) within a year's rental agreement.

    Well of course I do.

That's what I thought and that's why I asked what the minimum package was likely to be, I couldn't believe the 11p/m figure so asked for clarification.

Yes I will be doing this, and have read the thread about doing so. But I'm really fed up with being locked into NTL and I've had enough.

When my parents got an ADSL line, they got a new line installed.

I find it difficult to believe that my crappy old BT line with just two flimsy wires is capable of carrying voice and internet, hence the confusion, hence why I am asking the questions.

In addition to the BT line rental, and monthly charge from the ISP, there is a one time connection charge to have ADSL provided (around £50?). Some ISPs have a deal where they will pay this connection charge for you.

To get ADSL you need a BT phone line so if you don't have one, you will need to get one installed (another £99 to BT). You may also need to purchase microfilters for your telephone devices adding to the cost a bit more. You may also find your current router (probably DSL for NTL) will not work with ADSL. Worth checking that out too. Finally, if you do go BT, make sure you have copper (flimsy wire) all the way to the exchange. One of my friends went to get ADSL and couldn't because there is a bit of optical fibre between his house and the exchange.

You can get a lot of ADSL and DSL questions answered over at the ADSLguide website.
