Hi! I need some help. My partner and I have been seperated for almost a year now and I have just learned he has not repayed a loan ror which he had the money but was taken out in both our names. I know I am liable for half of ythe outstanding debt and want to know if I can ask the lender to split the debt so I can pay my share and avoid becoming a bad debtor.

Your help please

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but you're actually liable for the whole of the debt, as is your ex partner. Your lender will not consider splitting the debt, particularly if you're more likely to pay it than your ex.
  • Do you know any very large blokes with extremely short tempers?

Unfortunately, banks and loan companies will chase whoever they think they can most easily recover the money from

You're as pointed out liable for the whole of the debt if your ex isn't paying or can't pay. They will pursue whoever they think is most likely to pay up for the minimum amount of work and outlay for them. If your ex can't or won't etc then they WILL come to you for the full amount.

You need to make sure you chase him up for the full amount. Easier said than done I know but I'd be pretty p!55ed off if I were you

I managed to negotiate a 50% reduction in a debt I owed a very long time ago even though it was a joint loan - I was very persistent at the time, and it was about 15 years ago, but the law hasn't changed - you have nothing to lose by trying.

Any time it is not being paid your credit record is being trashed, why is your ex not paying at all?
