Actually - thinking further on the coupla comments I found hurtful on here - "wish I had time available for 1950s housewife standards.......". I guess the constructive way to think of this is that a lot of people arent going to realize that I have a combination of:
    - full-time job
    - no car (by choice)
    - tiny washing machine in tiny house
    - a busy life generally - whereby I'm constantly having to make compromises on all sorts of things in order to fit the whole reason for everything - ie "my own life" - in on top of the job and housework, etc.

...not helped by what I think is possibly a slightly depressive temperament (but then....how would I actually know? - no wonder I come back a lot of days too depressed to do anything much - with the number of attacks on my wages and conditions that have to be fought off/dealt with/etc:mad: - all for a job I hate anyway....)

But - being constructive here - I had thought that a duvet thats protected by two layers of sheeting (ie top sheet and the duvet cover) would be adequately protected for just having to lug it to the laundrette once a year - topped up by replacing those expensive duvets at 2 or 3 yearly intervals (lugging the old ones to the RSPCA for the dogs to use). Is it not the case that that is adequate? If so - all practical suggestions as to how to deal with the matter within the time/etc restrictions I have would be useful.

maybe it was me reading it wrong but I think you gave the impression you washed the duvet cover once a year not the duvet, thats what people were commenting on

    That's certainly what I meant; did I misread it?

Yes, I was surprised, too. Everyone has a different way of doing things and part of the fun is being able to see what other people do, without necessarily being critical.

Anyway, I change our sheet, pillow cases and duvet cover once a week. We have something under the bottom sheet to protect the mattress. This is partly due to hygiene and partly due to us having moved so often and surely the worst thing would be to have a stained mattress being carried out of the house. The duvet and pillows are washed once a year, when it is sunny and I can put them on the line. We get up, throw the covers back and throw the window open. We tidy up just before we go out.

Ceridwen, is there a laundry sevice that would collect? It might be expensive, I suppose.

Well Thriftlady - in my book the idea of a top sheet with the duvet means the duvet cover keeps "clear enough" that I can just wash said duvet cover annually - as the top sheet gets whipped off and washed at the same time as bottom sheet. So I regard that as laboursaving.

My bed is currently made up of bottom sheet, top sheet, blanket (encased in old duvet cover to keep it clean - so I never need to clean that), summerweight duvet (in cover), autumn weight duvet (in cover) and bedspread over the lot. I throw off layers from the top down - as I get too hot. To me - thats the easiest way to ensure minimum cleaning and the temperature I want in t'bed.

Make the bed:eek: Whats that pray tell? Best excuse in the world not to do so - knowing that throwing all the bedding back airs the bed - hence I only ever make it properly when I change the sheets and if I think anyone else might see it.
I read it as the duvet cover gets cleaned once a year, not the duvet. Fair enough - but I couldn't possibly keep the same duvet cover on for a year. I was raised that whole bed gets stripped every week , usually on a Saturday. Regardless of whether there's a sheet between me and the duvet cover. Regardless of whether it looks like it needs washed. The only time i dont change the bed once a week is if im in the middle of some sort of crisis - ie someone has died, about to die, seriously ill - that kind of thing.

    Everyone is different though.

  • There seems to be a lot of rather personal criticism going on in this thread. I would like to ask all who have contributed to query Ceridwen's laundry methods whether they change their mattresses at least once a year. A duvet which lies on the top separated by sheets etc is less likely to get contaminated than a mattress even if a mattress protector is used.

In our old style house I can't remember the eiderdowns and hand sewn quilts ever being washed (no washing machine nor launderettes). I think they were aired on the washing line once a year or so. The very heavy wool blankets may have been washed - but I can't remember when. However, the bedrooms were so cold in winter any bugs or mites would have frozen to death.

    .

Yes, but those of us who were a bit surprised were commenting on the duvet cover being only washed once a year (see above post), which is quite a different thing!

I hope mine didn't seem as personal criticism. People are different though and do different things - I was saying it's not for me. Sorry to Ceridwen if it seemed catty - genuinely not meant to.

I don't know what's going on with this board at the minute, with all the cleaning threads!

  • When ever a thread such as this comes along, seems to me,it always ends up in an "I'm cleaner than you" argument/debate.

We are all different and as I said on another thread I am sure if we all stood in line and sniffed each other I doubt we could tell who washed their clothing/bedding every day, once a week or once a fortnight.

I do so hate it when people question other peoples standards. Let's just stick to helping others when they ask a question.

No I am not saying when I wash my bedding, might be daily or yearly, but I am happy with it.

I'm not saying either; for similar reasons, I never say how much we spend on groceries ;)
