Do You Make Your Bed Every Morning?

Some time ago, and I don't remember where now (age), I read quite a lengthy article in a newspaper or magazine about cleaning and housekeeping, a sort of 'things you should know' type of article. The one thing that stuck with me was advice NOT to make up your beds each morning.

The article suggested fluffing the pillows a bit, straighten out the bottom sheet and fold down and leave the top sheet and duvet and/or blankets and of course, weather permitting, open up the windows for a bit. The general idea (although this was supposed to be scientific) being that you spend 6+hours in the bed at night and it should be left "open" to air during the day. So thus began my not making the bed - well, unless someone is going to see the bedroom :rotfl:

It isn't messy as I straighten everything and just turn down the duvet about halfway. Does anyone else do this or something similar?

You are 'making' the bed, just not putting the divet all the way up? To kill bed bugs? I completely forgot about this and usually make the bed pulling the duvet up flat.
But I'll start doing it your way again, it is better.
The only problem is my dog sometimes goes and lies on it when i'm at work, she can open the door by herself.

I do exactly the same as you, mainly because I and one of my sons are asthmatic, and dust mites thrive in warm, damp beds so hopefully a good airing deters them!

I don't have a bed, but when I used to I'd fold the top half of the duvet down over the bottom end, so most of the bed was exposed all day.

At night I'd get in bed, then reach down to pull the duvet back over me. Simples.

I don't make the bed from scratch each morning, mostly as I can't be bothered! I just straighten the sheets out, plump up the pillows and fold the duvet back so it looks half decent.

  • Thanks for giving me an excuse folks. :)

I'm pretty sure leaving my undercrackers on the floor helps aeration aswell. :D
  • We lived for 6 years in Holland and every morning (at least in the tiny village we lived in) they hung their duvets out of the window to air them.

I still 'turn down' the covers each morning. I still 'make the bed' - just in the opposite direction.

At my time of life (:rotfl::eek:) night sweats are common and I feel it 'airs' the bed each morning. I still do this even in the winter - and keep the small top windows open.

A cool, aired bed on a hot summer night or an inviting bed to snuggle into with the heating on in winter is heaven!

naw i dont make the bed straight away - i let it air for couple of hours then nip in bedroom on way back from loo and do it then. its a reaction to my mum virtually making the darn bed before i got out of it in the morning!!!! you learned to hang on to your dish too - or it would be washed up before youd finished eating!!!!

I don't use a top sheet (do most people?) as i'd end up kicking it off. Whenever I have slept in a bed with a top sheet i've ended up untucking it as don't like my feet feeling trapped and i'd get too hot.

I usually make my bed everyday as don't like seeing it unmade, but once in a blue moon i'll leave the duvet folded over.

  • I always make the bed as soon as I get up. I never thought of airing it. Oh dear.

I dont air the bed every day but I do it when I change the sheets.
We have a throw over the whole of the bed as the duvet covers and pillow cases aren't the right colour and I didn't want to have to spend more to replace them when they are still OK. If I didn't make it I'd go mad as I hate to see it looking untidy <OCD alert> LOL!
