Windows 7 upgrade ??

Have new Vista laptop that qualifies for Windows 7 upgrade, but I was wondering if I could use the disk to upgrade a Win XP machine instead.

don't think so the win 7 is more a vista fix than a different system like XP and Vista are. And why keep Vista is sucks. I mailed them and told them so too.

  • There is no "upgrade". Windows 7 is a new, clean install. Beware of this problem. You will lose all your data. If you are at univ backup your dissertation. Therefore it will "work" on an XP installation, but why do that first an "upgrade" is a clean install?

There is an upgrade, Microsoft withdraw Windows 7-e or whatever it's called but what the OP asks is impossible but I need links to prove it. <.<

Thanks for the answers so far, I understand that the "upgrade" in the UK is in fact a complete install on XP.

I ask because we are using Win 7 trial version dual booting with XP and the laptop user will be ok with Vista.

** Not at UNI, but fully understand about backups etc, work in IT....lol.

Read this Gary, especially this bit:

"In particular, it means that anyone in the UK (and Europe) can now upgrade their Windows Vista system to Windows 7, rather than having to perform a clean install - a side effect of Windows 7 E that PC Pro exclusively reported. "

Still does not answer if I can legally use the Win 7 disk to do a clean install over XP, if the disk supplied contains a full version and not just an upgrade.

No one knows yet so anything would be pure speculation and I say it's impossible because the COA for W7 maybe linked to your Vista key. Again, I'm speculating so I'm not sure I'm right.

Thats what I was thinking as the laptop supplier has all the info regarding activation codes etc, and no doubt has to report back to MS.

Just wondering if the Vista install would then flag up as not activated or not genuine after the XP system had been "upgraded" to 7.

Cheers, it is food for thought....

Hmm it is. Did you try to contact the laptop supplier? Maybe they can be of more help. I'll keep looking into this option but for now I'm stumped.

Legally, if you have an upgrade copy of windows 7 you can 'upgrade' from a copy of win xp (but it will need a clean install).

However, it depends on how your supplier will give you that copy of win 7.
If they just give you straight upgrade copy, there will be no problems.
but I suspect they may supply you with a new recovery disc, which will be highly tailored to the machine.

Either way the upgrade will be a brand new key, with the requirements that you have a qualifying os. but as I said it depends on what your supplier gives you.
