When you buy the iced finger buns from the bakery - is there sugar added to the dough at all? or is it just white bread with icing on?

Thinking of easy cheap treats for the step kids :D
I have a recipe for iced fingers in one my Marguerite Patten wartime cookbooks and it is identical to Delia's white loaf. You just shape it into fingers, bake then ice when cool. I would cover them with a tea towel when they come out of the oven to kepp them soft and only bake for about 20 mins. I'd forgotten about them, they would be a good treat for the kids. Think how fun they'd be iced in lurid colours!

When making the bread for iced bun fingers I replace half the water required with apple juice to give it a sweet taste.

Thriftlady, can you please find me your recipe for making Bread rolls? I have it saved at home, but would like to print it in work and can't remember what thread it was on (and would have no idea where to start!)

ignore me, found it! Reading the "handmade bread" thread .

Will it be cheaper for me to bake my own bread and pizza bases and making my own pizzas rather than opting for shop bought?

We've just bought some yeast and our first loave is currently in the airing cupboard.

I love to bake and hope this is a cheaper way of doing things

Maybe not on bread, it depends but definitely for pizza. It also tastes so much better homemade :D

we made pizza today, 300g flour with 1/2 tsp yeast, 1 tbsp olive oil, pinch of salt. 45 mins later rolled out the base and topped with some passata, mozarella, bit of chorizo, some mushrooms and a few fillets of anchovies. Total cost for today £1.20 (ish), feeding 4.

It is less expensive to make bread and pizza at home than to purchase them from a shop, but in addition to this you also know what is going in to the food you are eating and there won't be any artificial ingredients or preservatives (unless you put them there).

Furthermore, being able to knock up a couple of pizza's or a couple of loaves of bread is really quite rewarding and may well take less time than it takes to get the car out to drive to the supermarket (or catch the bus etc).

I make (at least) double the quantity of pizza dough and bread and then I freeze one lot, either baked or in it's dough form, ready to be shaped and baked at a later date.

seeing as own brand loaves are about 78p and brand names nearing £1.50p should i buy a bread-maker and try myself???

Your bread is cheap! Our locally made loaves (from locally grown flour) are about £1.42. Imported from the UK are slightly cheaper. However there is no comparison to homemade bread. Homemade actually has a flavour.
