Thanks everyone for their help, have thanked everyone. I will play around and see how much insurance cost under different cars.

I checked how much it would cost on confused.com if I took out a new policy under my dads name.

this is what you stated - does that not read you were going to get a car but insure it in your dad's name.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Nah, lots of people insure cars they don’t own, my OH for one, anybody who has a lease or financed car for lots more

lease car insurance is a different matter altogether as are cars on finance as they are in the insureds name.

the practice is called fronting and is illegal. - look it up

I passed my test at 17 and was driving a K plate renault clio that I bought for £500. Elephant took £550 ish off me as a provisional driver and £500 as a qualified driver. There normally quite good for quotes but I agree with everyone else, get a cheap runabout car that you wont care if you bump (then you can get 3rd party, fire & theft lol). I like to think my self a good driver (others may say otherwise lol) and on my 2nd day of driving I clipped a white van (he didni care - was a work van), couple months later I ended up in a ditch on a dark windy road etc etc (that car was a tank!!!!) So your not gonna want to dent your dads car. I kept that car for 2 years before buying a new corsa - again quite cheap to ensure but I had 3 years no claims.

Its all about building up that no claims!!

Fronting is telling lies about who is the main driver of a car.

There is nothing to stop you insuring a car you don’t own.

Telling the truth to the insurance company is the important thing, anything else risks the company being able to reject claims.

  • Forgive me if I missed anything,

BUT, what you need is a policy in your own name, what you don't need is any infringements in the next 2 years.

Go squeakyclean for a while and you may just get reasonably priced insurance by the time you are 25, sorry but you will pay for your less responsible siblings

Direct Line will honour no claims on named drivers on another policy.

My OH had very expensive insurance as he had two cars stolen. One off his drive in the night and one off the Rover carpark where he worked. So for the past 5 years he has been a named driver on my policies. This year he can take out his own insurance, with a load of no claim years. And yes I do drive the both cars more often than he does.

The only problem with Insuring your car in your dad's name (Apart from the fact he is fronting for you which will mean the Insurer may not pay any claims out unless you declare you are the main user). Is that you dad has only earned one set of no claims bonus, so he cannot use it on another vehicle and certainly cannot protect it as it does not exist. If you take out a policy in your dad's name with no claims bonus declared then when the Insurers ask for proof of his no claims bonus you will not be able to provide acceptable no claims bonus. this will mean the premium will rocket. (There are exceptions where Insurers will mirror the no claims bonus on a second car but I do not know of any that will do this with a young / inexperienced driver on the policy).

Ring esure and explain your dad has one car and this is a second car and ask if they will allow any no claims bonus and see what they say.

Yeah, thats good, but the NCB is not given at the rate it would be on his/her own policy, own policy I'm sure is the way to go, if the OP wants to keep it clean;)
