Just passed driving test - need help!
Hi I passed my driving test a few weeks ago. I wanted to get insured on the family car (astra). I am 21 years old.
1) Insurance was coming to £2700, which is out of my price range.
2) My dad has 4 months left on his policy with endsleigh. To add me to that policy it would cost £1400 extra just for the few months remaining:mad::mad::mad:
3) I checked how much it would cost on confused.com if I took out a new policy under my dads name. It wasnt too bad, the best was with esure at £600. He already pays £200ish so it was only £400 more. However, there was one downside, no claims was not protected. Does anybody know if I phone esure direct, would I beable to get no claims protected? Does anyone know how much extra it would cost? (The reason I am not phoneing them to ask is because I dont want to go through the long winded procedure of going through all my details because I want to take the policy out in january, thought it would be quicker as someone would know here)
This policy I would have to take out in january when the current policy ends. So I am sorted for then. I have no idea when it comes to insurance, so if anybody has any tips on anything else I can do?
4) I am sorted for january but it is 4 months till then. Anyone who remebers passing there driving, would know you just want to drive drive drive - 4 months is an eternity. So I looked at taking out day insurance for odd days, I cant even do that as you have to be 25:rolleyes: Does anybody know any company that would insure a 21 year old for day insurance?
5) My next step was to look to hiring a car. However the few places I phoned said you needed your licence for atleast 2 years. However a quick google showed shoed that people managed to hire a car within a few months of passing but the same companies said I need to wait 2 years when I phoned. Can anybody recommend any company I could go for that allow me to hire a car?
I feel frustrated because I am priced out of insurance for now, cant take day insurance and cant hire a car! As you can tell, I am itching to drive:o
I greatly appreciate any replies, I know the people on here are very helpful.

What do you mean, "took out a new policy under my dads name"?0

^^^
If your dad is still the main driver an you are using it this is fine, but if your dad is fronting a policy for you to drive the car as the main driver that's a bit naughty.
As you're learning quickly, just buying a car is only part of the expense! Personally, I'd find a cheap to buy, cheap to insure runabout and drive that. You'll be building up your no claims, and you wont mind to much if you bump it.0 -
What I meant with my dad was, taking out a policy under his name and me being a named driver in the policy.
Thanks for the replies. Would like to buy a cheap car as you mentioned but I am just starting a post graduate course which has eaten up most my funds so unfortunatly I cant do that.
Just found out that swinton insure 21 year olds on day insurance at £26 a day for me, a bit expensive but atleast I have the option:beer::beer:
EDIT - How do I find out which cars are cheap to insure? thanks0 -
You cant buy a policy in your dads name.
the policy holder must have a financial interest in the car that is being insured.
ie he must own it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
To answer your original question. I imagine if you called up esure or just went on their website you would indeed be able to protect your NCB. I imagine it would be an extra £50 or so.
Do you know about how insurance groups work? All cars are put into a group from 1 to 20, 1 being the cheapest to insure. I believe cars also become cheaper to insure as they get older as well.
http://www.parkers.co.uk/insurance/Groups/by-group.aspx?ig=1#ig=0
That website is very good for car and motoring info generally, and that link shows you all cars in group 1, you can have a play around seeing whats in the different groups.
To keep costs down I'd look for something no higher than group 4, but the lower the cheaper.0 -
Cars under 1.4 and basic models, no mods etc. Saxo's are notoriously expensive though as they are renowned for 'boy racers'
Corsa's are quite cheap to insure and run, i had corsa's for the first few years, great way to build up no claims.
I do know how you feel, as soon as i passed my test i had to go back to work:mad:
all i could think about was driving, luckily i got insured that day (thanks daddy) for £600 for the year:eek: although that was reduced alot because i had done my pass plus, and still £600 was cheap for a 17 year old even then (nearly 10 years ago:eek:)
Good Luck OP and be careful, there are some bad drivers out there.0 -
EDIT - How do I find out which cars are cheap to insure? thanks
Plenty of sites on the internet - here's just one :
http://www.parkers.co.uk/insurance/#ig=0
Basically, the lower the insurance group, the cheaper it will be to insure. But for a young driver who's only recently passed their test, I'm afraid it's going to cost :-(
As a VERY rough guide, the sorts of cars that are cheap to insure are those that have low performance / engine size, are cheap to repair when they do get pranged, and are not attractive to thieves. So something like a 1 litre Corsa will be cheaper than a 2 litre GTi something-or-other.
There's a lot more to it than that, but that's the very basic starting point.0 -
Forgive me if I missed anything,
BUT, what you need is a policy in your own name, what you don't need is any infringements in the next 2 years.
Go squeakyclean for a while and you may just get reasonably priced insurance by the time you are 25, sorry but you will pay for your less responsible siblingsI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
