Sky Protection (Warning)

Thought i would put a warning out there for scam phone calls that try and sell you sky protection (HD box insurance).

My dad got a phone call from a company claiming to be sky, trying to sell him insurance. He was cought out and paid £120 for 3 years protection. 3 months down the line he developed a problem with the sky box and suprise suprise he cant get any details of the company. the company in question was "Sky Pro Plan Ltd"

I have advised him to ring his credit card company up to change his card details and to see if he can claim his money back in any way.

So just a quick remainder to keep your wits about you when answering cold calls.

wasnt something similar on watchdog a few months ago , they imply they are from sky but the are nothing to do with them.

  • I dont watch watchdog. But i will in future. He has just got off the phone with RBS who say that if he gave them his card details then they are not obliged to refund him his money. He has to send them a letter in writing explaining the issue and then they will make a decision regarding refunds.

I managed to find a telephone number on the card statement that pionted me to another company how move money about for the scammers. And they gave me a number for sky pro plan, which was an answer machine and was told to leave a message.

looks like my dad has lost his £120 and a little bid of pride.

They dont actually say they are from SKY but they imply that they are and catch a lot of people out.

It annoys me how do these people who imply they are to do with SKY get your details.

Are SKY selling details en masse.

This question has been asked countless times. It seems that Sky themselves are not selling the details (why would they they have their own insurance service to sell) it does appear however that the installers may be selling the details as I have had phonecalls which would relate to the installation date of old equipment which Sky know has been changed to a new machine but clearly the orginal installer wouldn't.

I expect the company has been liquidated and the same people would have started a new company called "Pro Sky Plan Ltd" or something similar.

IIRC they've denied doing so, and I've seen several accounts of people without Sky at all being called by these scammers, to suggest they're just fishing/cold-calling.
  • Sky must have sold/leaked customer details. Very dodgy.

You say i can claim under the section 75 ruling. But after reading up on it and downloading the template letter from this site, There is no template or mention of scams. just faulty items or companies that have gone bust. Would this still apply to us??

I think that they are mostly legitimate companies, it the practice of actually signing up customers that is unsavoury.

And if everything is okay, dad got a good deal at £120 for 3 years, most of the ones who range me were wanting about £80 a year.

  • We've had these phone calls a few times and my idiot DH gave out his details over the phone without double checking first. Once I found out I told him it was probably a scam and to cancel his card, etc which he did straight away. We later discovered that it was a bona fide company when they called us back a day or two later as they said the bank wouldn't let them take the money. They were so off hand about the fact they could be dodgy, etc we declined to give the info again. We just decided that if the Sky box does go kaput then we will buy another one, they aren't that expensive and the service you get from these repair companies is rubbish. You get reconditioned boxes which are far older models than what you orginally have, meaning less features like no Sky anytime. We did previously pay for repair with one of these companies and thats why I wouldn't use them again, you get rubbish back if your box isn't repairable.

Personally I can't believe my idiot DH actually gave out his bank details to someone who phoned, I was furious when he told me. Could have been anyone calling.

If you do want a Sky box repair company please check they are reputable before you go ahead.
