Anyone had laminate flooring in a new build?

  • I'd go for Karndean..........it looks like wood......but is a lot harder wearing than laminates.....not that cheap though, but it is long lasting....!!!!!
  • I guess I could understand if it was an upstairs flat, but a house?
When the flat above mine was bought several years ago by a property developer, he employed a builder to completely renovate it. That included laying laminate flooring without any sort of soundproofing.
Since the latest tenants moved in, I am constantly reminded of a herd of wildebeest on their annual migration across the Serengeti.. ARGH!!
    It wasn't me.. honest..
  • Hello, we are getting a new build and aren't getting any flooring included but have arranged 'money-off' from their supplier and will have laminate and carpet choices. If I were you I would really push them for a specific answer, I'd imagine that it probably has something to do with cost!
Could anyone who has paid for flooring themselves give me an idea of how much it costs to carpet and/or laminate a new build house? Ours is three stories, typical sized town-house. (Sorry to crash in on the OP)

    Thanks

It may be as simple as new homes do need time to settle down. Shrink a bit and carpets are more forgiving than laminate.

Hi we have a similar sounding house so will try to give you a rough estimate!
    Hall: laminate
    Stairs up: carpet
    hall on first floor: carpet
kitchen was already vinyl but had redone no cost though
    lounge: laminate
    toilet: already vinyl
    second stairs:carpet
    hall: carpet
    Bedroom 1: laminate
    Bedroom 2: laminate
bathroom: was done but we had re-done in funky water droplet vinyl!

TOTAL: around £3k tops off the top of my head..the laminate is a good quality one and is very hardwearing (oak effect & 10 year guaruntee)), we have cats and im a CM so it gets a good hammering hasn't got one bit of damage and we have lived here 2 years in oct..the carpets are cream and again for hardwearing areas, off the top of my head it was about £10 a square metre but as we were getting the whole house done we got a good deal...not overly practical but are quite easy to keep clean and are again looking practically as good as new other than a couple of steps when you walk in which are still quite good.

That may be but I dont think it was very nice of you to voice your opinion on a thread where the OP desires laminate and is asking a question about getting it. Sorry, but unless the OP had asked for opinions about laminate, it would have been nicer to say nothing at all in this instance. We do all have different tastes and I'm sure there's many who would disagree with you anyway, but that's a different thread.

OP, top range laminate has improved leaps and bounds since the stuff that was available years ago. Like the others have said, I suspect the only issue with Persimmon not laying it is due to cost and hassle issues rather than suitability.

    Hear hear...Good point well made..
One day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T

Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged. :(

    Or maybe not:mad:

Does your house have solid floor? Expert opinions vary on the time required to dry before laying wood / laminate.

TIP: When we bought a new build, we had the builder pin the skirtings so that it was easier for our fitter.

  • gabyjane thankyou so much, we also have cats and a young child so pretty similar, very helpful :)

OP i hope you have a good result from your homebuilder? If they are cagey with you perhaps you could visit another build locally they have done and scout out if they have laminate, then when you go back to your sales office you can specifically say that they do do laminate? (if... they actually do!)

I personally think laminate is lovely and if you have pets and/or young children it is an absolute dream, we have all our downstairs (and will have all downstairs in new house) laminate, every day I have food spilt by my one year old and clean laminate looks much better than spaghetti-stained carpet in my opinion ;)
