No internet connection

My DD has a Sony Vaio laptop.
She is frequently finding she cannot access the internet either via my wireless system or when out and about.
I have run Malwarebytes and SAS to see if the connection is being blocked by an infection (they were only about 3 days out of date) but absolutely nothing shown.
I tried it myself yesterday and nothing but having just tried again now, suddenly it connects!
Anyone got any ideas why this should happen?
It doesn't appear to be a factor of anything I'm doing on the main PC (mine!).
Help?

The connection is coming and going like a fiddlers elbow!
It stayed long enough to update Malwarebytes and SAS but then dropped again.
It won't show my wireless network even though I am only in the next door room and mine is fine.
I have run Hijack this and will post the log when it allows (!) but could it be BT playing with the power(??) or anything?0 -

I don't understand why you think that an old hijackthis log will help! (Scan saved at 19:26:21, on 16/06/2009)
The problem is the laptop connecting to the router (home hub) over the wireless link and this can easily be proved by connecting via an Ethernet cable.
What other wireless channels are in use locally? Have you tried changing the wireless channel? Are there any other devices that could be interfering with your wireless signal? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Good advice given above.
These sort of problems are nearly always related to wireless connectivity problems.
As previously suggested you need to make a connection directly into your router with a ethernet cable. (Ensure you have powered off of disabled your wireless card in laptop).
Once you have done that verify if you have a good consistent internet connection.
Depending on the outcome of this you can move on to testing the wireless connection......

OMG! Hadn't seen that! I ran a new scan and posted the logfile it created by cutting and pasting! So not sure how that has happened?

Sorry, Espresso, does that mean I have to unplug my wired connection (which I use for my home PC as it is very old) and use that to plug into the Vaio? If so, there are two appropriately sized/shaped ports, one shows the network symbol and one has no apparent markings.

Do you mean other peoples wireless?
There has been a BIG increase in the number of BT hubs shown in the vicinity since I went with BT. Could this be diluting the signal?
How do I change the channel?
Thanks.:confused:0 -
How do I do that which I have highlighted in red please?Good advice given above.

Bear in mind that the problem also exists when the computer is being used at other locations.
I do wonder, though, just how many HijackThis results sheets flossy-splodge is going to inflict on this sub-forum for scrutiny by others.
There comes a point at which the seeking of occasional advice on an urgent personal computer problem develops to the point of becoming a prevailing upon the time and patience of others by using this sub-forum as a free substitute for proper commercial maintenance of a whole series of other people's computers.
We should not, of course, wonder whether flossy-splodge receives any reward for fixing the computers of other people with the advice she is given so endlessly (and free) on here - should we?

It is very simple to disconnect the Ethernet cable from your machine and plug it into the machine that has the wireless problem. This will not fix anything just like the hijacktghis log though, just for elimination, to prove to yourself that the problem is in fact just the wireless connection.
As you have stated that there is a BIG increase in the number of BT hubs shown in the vicinity, it's likely that you are simply suffering from interference.
You need to see what wireless channels others are using and change your hub to use one as far away from the others - simple.
You should be able to log into your hub by entering http://192.168.1.254 into your browser. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
But, with respect, the problem appears to lie with the computer itself, not simply with the domestic wireless network.flossy_splodge wrote: »

flossy-splodge has every right to post as many HijackThis logs as she deems fit. The majority of users here will try to assist her with problems encountered and not make veiled insinuations.
