Why are pedigree cats not sold till 12/13 weeks then?

If dogs are sold so young?

I have heard that taking them from the mum/litter too young can causes socialisation problems.
Most proper GCCF pedigree cats are not allowed to leave the breeders until they are this age and FULLY vaccinated (ie both vaccines, not just half like dogs are. Just different licensing rules from the KC

When I bought Charlie he was 12 & a half weeks & he was so tiny. I can't imagine how it can be right that they leave any earlier.

I have been through similar myself with new pups, it sounds like gastroenteritis
to me which will respond well to treatment. It just a combination of stress and maybe to much excitement, pup is too young to have left its litter and you need to let it rest more than it plays at the moment.
Good luck and keep us posted
  • I've had my Border Collie doggie for about 4 weeks now she is only 8 months old, I've had to change her food to working dog food as she is not putting weight on, the person I got her off said she had been wormed and de flead so I don't know what else could be the problem.

I hope your puppy is ok, dogs are funny little things and she might have an upset tummy because of the long drive and new surroundings. My doggie was a bit off side for about 2-3 days but is now perfectly fine apart from being a bit naughty :)

    Please keep us updated

Good morning Lisaann, how was last night with your puppy?
  • Thanks for all your posts I camped out on the sofa next to Elsie last night and at 2am I heard the plate chinking about. she was eating the food the vet gave Chicken and Rice. She seemed starving. Got quite playful trotting around after me. She still had a quite watery mess. When the kids got up this morning she was really playful with them. I took her to the vets and they were happy for her to come home with me. She has some antibiotics to take. She has some jollop to settle her tummy. And some special sensitive stomach food. She seems to be drinking frequently. I only have to take her back if I have a problem.

It is all quiet in our house today as all the kids went back to school. so me and Elsie have been having a nice rest together.

The rice will make her thirsty as well as the runs making her de-hydrated. Just make sure she has water down but not really cold as this will set her tummy off again. Keep play gentle with lots of time for her to sleep - she'll be driving you mad soon enough lol!
It aint over til I've done singing....
  • I found the pups on pets4homes website. The pups were brought up in a house. The owners have mum nan and another dog a springer spaniel.
The Breeders have four children so Elsie seems more at home with my kids than with me or my husband!
They are KC registered and I have her KC number not her paper work yet.
I felt like we had followed all advice about choosing a puppy.
It really is an awful experience and I hope this situation is very rare. The kids were so excited yesterday they got up hoping to have a whole day to get to know Elsie and she was barely breathing and being rushed to the vet.
I have spoken with the breeder today to keep her informed all the other pups are fine.
  • Hiya, just read through this and just wanted to say how pleased I am she seems to be on the mend, I wanted to recommend a website for you to look at which helped me out so much when we got Max who's now 2. Not sure if I'm allowed to type the website on here but if you google labrador forums you will find it:)x
