Our new puppy is really sick

We are really worried, we collected our choc Labrador Elsie yesterday she is 7 weeks old. We thought is it to early but the breeder assured it was quite usual. She is KC registered and we did meet mum.

We had a journey of 1hr 30 mins to get to her home, she seemed fine an occassional whimper. When we arrived home she was a bundle of fun our four kids were so impressed she was fine.

She was eagerly drinking and eating the same food and amount as the breeder recommended.

We stayed up with Elsie until 1am to make sure she was settled. We went to bed and I heard a little whimpering but not to much at I think 3am. I work at 5am and was really concerned that she wasnt making any noise at all I had prepared for a full night of whimpering. I got up and she was sat up looking forlorn with puddles of very watery poo. She appeared to have lost loads of weight in just a few hours. She now resembles an RSPCA advert. Took her to vet and she has been put on a drip all day. I have spoken to the breeder to check all parents vaccines are up to date fearing Parvo Virus.

The breeder states 6wks free insurance. I called to get the policy number from the breeder and to check the other pups are ok. No problems with the other dogs they all appear fine. I had to contact the kennel club to register for the insurance so now I dont suppose we are covered even though the cover starts from day of purchase. I didnt actually telephone to register our details to it until after she was ill.

Vets say it is touch and go could go either way. The in vet parvo test came back negative. She is at home with us this evening as they felt she was to ill to remain un watched overnight at the vet. I have to take her back tommorow. She will put back on a drip. And have a bit more jollop to help with the runs. She is drinking tonight quite frequently.

Anyone had any similar problems. I am feeling really awful I dont know what we will do if we lose her.

Could this all be caused by stress of leaving her family. She seems to be really upset tonight. she is curled up with a scooby doo toy.

  • Sounds like more than just stress to be honest... what does the vet think?
is the breeder a reputable one?

I am so sorry to hear about your experience Lisa.

Seven weeks is not too early to be taking a puppy - it is about usual to be honest.

You absolutely did the right thing in making sure you got Elsie to the vets as quickly as you did.

I agree with FC - it does sound like somethng more than stress.

Just hoping here that all turns out well for you.

Could I just suggest that you check what your out of hours vet arrangements are now - that way if ever need to take Elsie to the vets in an emergency, you won't be trying to find information when you are stressed.

  • The Breeder has called to check on her progress this evening. I thought that the breeder was reputable when we brought her. The Vet hasnt really given a diagnosis just that its a very touch and go. She is drinking every 5 mins at the moment and keeps wandering around.

  • Good point from MrsB about being clear what the vet's emergency contact arrangements are, but I have always understood eight weeks is generally considered best. This from the dogstrust website:
A good breeder will not let a puppy go until he is at least 8 weeks old and some prefer to wait until 12 weeks.

I know there are exceptions to this, for example, guide dog pups, but I wonder why the breeder was happy to let them go at 7 weeks when this is not the case?

Poor pup... if she is wandering around at least she is up and mobile though... I hope she is ok - do you have to take her back to the vet's tomorrow?

I am glad the breeder is concerned - they may be reputable, and it may just be bad luck, or they may not be...what was the breeder like when you visited? ie. what was the set up, how many dogs, were the dogs kept in the house or not? was the breeder recommended to you? if not, where did you find them? Did they ask you lots about your home and lifestyle, or were they just happy to sell you a pup?

reading your post has made me cry, the poor little pup, i am sitting here now looking at my pup and would hate to see her so ill.
When we got ours, we had a long drive home, she was stressed, drooling everywhere, and slept constantly for about 2 days then she was fine.
I would say that your pup drinking is a good sign, it will keep her hydrated.
Hopefully it's just a bug that the vets will clear up.
Please keep us posted, i will be thinking of you and pup:heart2:

7 weeks seems so young. I got my pup at 12 weeks old and would never get one at 7 weeks. I do hope the pup recovers well, fingers crossed for you. Please anyone thinking of buying a pup if the breeder lets the pups go at 7 weeks insist that they hold onto them until at least 9-10 weeks old.
