I have been trying to use WinAvi vide converter to convert some files in a Audio_Ts and Videa_TS folders after backing up some personal DVDs.
Plan was to conver them to AVI files so i can carry it easily on a portable HD unit.
However, i cant get the AVI file to play sound (or record)..tried it twice and checked all the options. I have selected the output option to show Xvid +mp3...
any help welcome
thanks

Why not just rip them to XviD in one fell swoop?
I use Magic DVD Ripper for this as it very easy to use, especially in conjunction with Koepi's XviD Codec.
You can try it before buying.
Otherwise there are free direct to MPEG4 convertors such as Fair Use Wizard 2 Light Edition0 -

You are wrong about that: http://www.divx.com/en/converter-trial-windows
In addition, you have to buy yet another plug-in to get MPEG2 support and still you won't be able to rip direct from DVD.
Please check your facts before posting. It only takes a minute or two and can save someone else a lot of wasted time.0 -
I have checked that version and sorry you are correct.
I have been using my version for years, ripping from DVD to VCD and divx and had not paid for the s/w.
Obviously this has changed in later versions_______________________

Maybe you found a serial code somewhere. It has always been a paid for component.
If you wish, you can post the version that you are using and I can check.0 -
To prove a point i will get this info.
I was using an old IBM T30 laptop at the time when I first started doing this. I do not use dodgy serials. As a S/W developer myself I would be potentially robbing myself.

I use HandBrake for converting video files. It has these encoders.0

But does it rip directly from DVDs or do you need to install something else in order to do so?
I haven't tried it so I don't know.0 -

I haven't tried it so I don't know.
It does on the Mac and Linux, but not in Windows.
For what it's worth, as a Mac user, I have the option of ripping from the DVD, but I don't use it. Converting a DVD can take hours. Ripping a DVD takes minutes. Encoding from the DVD just means more wear and tear on the DVD drive, and it keeps the drive in use for a long time too. It doesn't really save any time either as it has to read the DVD anyway as it's encoding (and doing so might even slow the encoding down).0
