Reasons why NOT to buy a pre-registered model....

You may well be a year 'behind' on the current registration number - depending on how long you intend to keep the car, it'll be worth a couple hundred, or later in it's life only a few £$£$ less.

You'll loose some warranty/breakdown assurance, depending on just how old it is - might be 6months or more.

You'll be buying USED, as opposed to NEW, in relation to your staturatory rights. So don't complain if it's had some paintwork repairs, say, 'cos it ain't a new motor!!

You'll loose any 'bonus' the car maker pays the dealer, which might have gone to clinching the sale as a new car to you anyway - they've already 'spent' this, when registering & 'reducing' the price.

You'll not get the 'special' rate or 0% finance, the car maker sometimes has available on NEW sales.

You might only get 6months, or balance of any road tax, rather than the expected 12months on new.

You might need to negotiate a full tank of fuel.

Just a few thoughts for you!!

This makes no difference to your statutory rights, they apply to new and used goods.

One thing that I have heard, and it may be apocryphal, is that, if you write it off when it's less than one year old, insurers won't replace it with a new one unless your name is there as the first owner. Obviously for a pre-reg, it won't be.

Thats why I mentioned it in relation to paint/body repairs - you couldn't reject it if you were to discover after you bought it, that repairs had been carried out - something you'd not expect on a NEW car!!

When Mrs V ordered her NEW Mx5 she wrote on the order that it would only be acceptable, if it had not undergone ANY paintwork or bodywork rectification.

This surprised the dealer, but when you see just how many NEW cars have damage during transit, you'd know what I mean!!

Maybe, but £36 for full cover from many insurance companies, many cars come with 3 years RAC or AA cover anyway. One french car maker removes essential things such as wheel changes from its cover !

Yes but as its pre-reg you can see the car before you agree to buy it, most new cars have to be ordered, no chance to view it in many cases !

The dealers have already worked this out in the price you pay for a new car, makes no difference at all, prices are clear either way.

Your right in most cases you would lose this, but 0% finance is only 0% if its the same price as cash, in many cases it isn't !

Most pre-reg cars won't be taxed before sale, you won't lose anything and you know before you buy it anyway. Some dealers sneak 6months tax onto new cars to save cash !

You don't get a full tank of fuel automatically with a new car, manufacturers send new cars out almost empty. You will get the same new or pre-reg, they both had to be delivered and driven out of the factory !
  • Use the car supermarkets
    or goto https://www.drivethedeal.co.uk

To get under £7k on a brand new 1st and only owner deal on a car, your best bets this month are the 3dr Citroen C2 (and the lower spec' range on the 5dr C3's), Ford Ka and Fiesta (big BIG bonuses on Fiesta at the moment with quite a few coming in under £7k) and Kia Picanto's maybe? (Good product but depends what badge you prefer on the front and if you have a dealer near you for servicing etc)

    Hope that helps

Thanks for comments, Arrowsmith - as can be seen, it REALLY does pay to check what you REALLY get for your 'saving' by buying a pre-reg - chances are you'll not have to add too much to your budget, to nave the NEW car with yours first name on the V5!!
