talking of diamonds ive just lost one out of my wedding band! it is 18ct gold with 3 diamonds set in from beaverbrooks and is currently selling at £450,i thought it would be good from that shop but turns out it's lasted 5 years !!!
i asked today they said £175 repair but seeing as you bought it here we'll let you have it for £125 how generous!!!!!!! i said forget it i'll wear a hole!!! now i'm going to see if house insurance will cover it but for anyone buying wedding rings beware the diamond set ones may not last forever!!!! i now wish i'd stuck to a plain band0 -
UPDATE
Assistant was rude for starters when we presented our case, but we remained calm. Then we spoke with top brass and he’s for sending it back to the manufactures in London. He didn’t come across very professional at times, accusing/hinting that the second jeweller swapped the diamonds. I’m waiting for his call and will take it from there…0 -

Stones falling out of rings is quite common unless you have them regularly checked and cleaned. Knocks that you don't even notice can damage the setting or chip the stone. Your household insurance should cover the diamond replacement. If they don't look around/ask friends for recommendations of small jobbing jewellers. They will match the diamond for you and set it for a fraction of the cost that you will pay in a major retailers.
For anyone else planning on buying an engagement ring if you go to a small jobbing jeweller (the person running this should be skilled in diamond mounting, setting, repairs). They will obtain diamonds/stones for you on approval. You can then choose your stone, pick your setting style etc. all for less than the equivalent price in a major retailer. A good goldsmith will be happy to show you examples of previous pieces they have made.
To the OP
I don't think I would be very happy with a valuer removing my diamond to check weight. They could damage the setting and the stone fall out.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

to poppy and scotlass that is exactly my argument i have been having my rings cleaned and inspected every month and sometimes more frequently because its free at beaverbrooks i have a card to allow the service and i love it when they look nice and clean and so you can imagine how annoyed i am that they are meant to be checking them and this has happened. i have been a lot more than i do with my fillings!!! so i am wondering if they have spoilt it through too much cleaning solution? they say no but who knows?0

It's not the cleaning solution but the cleaning machine. The probably use an Ultrasonic machine (more powerful than the home ones you can buy) this shakes all the muck out of the ring. You would hope that if a stone is going to fall out it does so in the machine but it's not always the case. My OH used to be a diamond mounter so my rings were always in the cleaner and being checked etc. I still lost a diamond a couple of times though. Probably knocked it.

thanks poppy for that the lady in the shop said it is an ultrasonic machine but i had no idea it shakes it i didnt know how it works so that has probably not helped if i have them done so often maybe we should only be allowed to clean once or twice a year to prevent damage. thanks again youve been really helpful! i wont be going very often in future0

Hi Everyone
I'm thinking about asking my girlfriend to marry me :j . But first, I need a ring! I have read all about the four C's and all that and have a fair idea of what I'm looking for, I'm just not sure where to buy from.
Anyone able to reccommend a reputable / non-rip-off place to buy from??
Thanks!

It sounds lovely to have a ring to present her with - but if she loves something antique and you get modern or vice versa it could be a bit of a disappointment.
One of the nicest things is choosing a ring together as hopefully she will be wearing it for a long time.
Could you buy a pretty (costume ) ring in a nice box and present this to her as a "token" till you choose one together."This site is addictive!"
