. I'd much rather feed good home cooked frozen food than less good food out of a packet. The freezer is one of the tools I use to help me be a cook-from-scratch,-no-packet-food cook. I love cooking, I love growing my own food. By using the freezer as part of my preserving techniche for home grown food I am eating well, and cheaply. We also rear chickens. Our freezer means we eat good quality ethically reared meat (not just from home but when its discounted/cheaply available) which I also think is better for us.
I've lived without a freezer too, and could again, but a freeer makes eating very well, very much easier.
You lucky thing, I wish I could rear chickens to eat. We have chickens for eggs but I can't face eating them afterwards so we have a lot of retired chickens in our garden :-) I have to spend a small fortune on free range chicken as I can't bear to buy the cheap chicken as we have them as pets - I wouldn't make a very good farmer :-(0 -

ATm its only the boys that we can't rehome
but we're planning expansion: this time next year I really hope we're producing all our own poultry, including ducks, geese, a couple of turkeys a year and guinea fowl, along with some red meat too. We've been looking to buy a suitable property for some time, and are starting to see more and more we like within our price range. In March DH has a payrise, and a little more job security, so sometime soon it will be time.
Its hard, but its not as hard as eating meat that you are worried about he background of.0 -
Many chefs will tell you that some food actually tastes better if it has been frozen, especially if it has spices. Curries and chilli get hotter

Well done OP!
I used to batch cook for DS1 and 2 and then if that nights dinner wasn't suitable for them to eat I knew there was a stock of food in the freezer.
I'm wondering about turkey and apricot burgers, have you a recipe?0 -

Fantastic - we are lucky enough to have a farm shop about 1 minute away and they raise lovely cows and pigs so I buy 99% of my meat there now. They don't do chickens yet but are looking into doing it soon so that will be good. I won't let my hubby see your post as he was wanting to get turkeys and geese (he has the cockerals for Christmas but now sure all of them will end up on a plate as the kids are getting friendly with them) but I keep reminding him we are not on a farm :-)
Tiamai, exactly - fresh frozen food (not processed) is fab! Found a link for turkey and apricot burgers here - they look yummy:
