If they are 10K, then it looks like whatever they have been 'mixed' with is reacting to your skin, when getting them apprised, see if they can establish what the other metals are (I would put money on it being nickel), and also see if they can check if it is a gold compound (ie gold and other materials) or if it is filled gold/rolled gold (not as good as gold, even 9K gold, but is heavier duty than plating)

Have to say though, I stil have concerns about you defrauding HMRC

i have not defrauded anyone, as i said before companies usually offer me this to avoid custom charges. if i knew it was fraud i would not have requested it nor put it in my original post!

i did not know they "mix" gold:confused:

this has never happened with any of my other gold items!! i guess i have no choice but to chalk this up as a loss and something for me to learn from! i will not be buying internationally again.

I would be very careful. You have commited fraud by asking them to send it as a gift and of low value. If you kick up a fuss they might be tempted to forward your correspendence to customs. To be honest they probably think your a loony. First you demand they commit a fraud then you claim that the earings are fake. Its no wonder they are refusing to communicate with you. Just look at it from their view. There doesn't seem to be anything bad on a google search about them so its probably just a one off faulty. I thought paypal covered you for your purchases no matter who you brought from??!

i did not know it was fraud, like i have said several times!! most companies offer this to me.

    lol @ thinking i'm a loony, thats nice hey?

i did NOT demand they commit fraud. i requested if they could put a lower value on the form, to avoid customs! they told me "YES, we do this often for international customers!" i still have ALL of their E-Mails.

its not a "claim" that the earring are fake! its a fact!! i've never had gold jewellery turn black on me!!

there is nothing negative on google serch and nothing positive neither...
they have thousands of positive feedback on their webite, this is what made me order in the first place!!!

They aren't likely to put negative comments on their website now are they? I thought it was pretty obvious that asking a company to send an item you brought as a gift to avoid paying import duties was fraud or at least maybe wrong?

    .

Unless it is 24K gold, then it is mixed with another metal, 24K is pure gold, 9K is actually less than 50% gold. So at 10K it is still less than half gold, and will be mixed with something, most probably nickel (there is an EU directive on nickel content, as that is usually what people are sensitive to, so there has to be minimum traces in anything made/sold within the EU now, I actually source my plated findings for my jewellery making very carefully now to make sure that there is no nickel in them, my hypersensitive mother in law also tests them for me)

If it is rolled gold or gold filled, then it will be a very heavy coating on the base metal, but this is much thicker and more robust than normal gold plating, as it is a sheath of gold over the metal, rather than the metal just being dipped and coated.

The higher the karat count, the softer the metal, so that's why a lot of jewellery is usually 9K, the metal that it is mixed with makes it stronger. If you wear a 9k and a 24k ring together, then you will find that the 9k will 'erode' the 24k one.

And the gold turning black is down to something in you reacting with the base metal, not saying that there is anything wrong with you, it's just the way that some metals react to sweat, things like that.
  • thank you jo :)

i wonder if they will turn all black? :( what can i do to stop/delay the process?

i keep them in the box with those papers, like the intructions say...what else can i do?

It all depends on what the other metal/s are, there is no way of knowing until it happens, sometimes it's sweat, sometimes it's certain perfumes etc, it just a reaction with the metal and 'something'

If you can, try and get a jewellery cleaning cloth (You can get them in H Samual, Warren James etc) and give them a wipe over with that, it may be enough to bring the tarnish off.
  • Declaring something a gift, when it is not and putting a false value on it in order to avoid payind import duty is defrauding Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.
