height query (girls)

Options
When do girls stop growing? My 13 year old daughter has now caught up with her older sister, who will be 17 next month. Older daughter is feeling a bit put out. Is there a possibility that my older daughter will grow any more? Both are about 5' 5". I am 5'9" and Dad is 6' 1".

Personally, I am just so thankful that they are lovely healthy girls and I tell them this all the time, but it would be nice if I could give my older daughter the news that she really wants to hear!

Any help or info gratefully accepted.

Thank you and what a fantastic site.

    Hi,

Based on the fact that your daughter should be approx on the 50th centile (normal growth) ou should add both your and her dads height together (eg: dad 186 cm + mum 156 cm = 342cm)

Then divide by 2 (eg: =171)

Then take off 7 cm (eg: 164cm ....) this is the average based on the fact that both you and her dad are of average height.

This should give you a rough idea of how tall your daughter will be. The average for a 13 yr old is 155cm and growth is expected to slow at around 17 yrs, at this age the average is 163.5cm.

I'm 158cm which makes me 13 and a half years old!!!! That'll do me! :D

It also depends on when you and your husband did your growing. Mr TM is 6'1 but got there early. Both my boys are taking after him but will be taller I'm sure. I was a sprout until I was 15 (I was still the smallest in the school in the THIRD year) Then the summer of my 16th, I started growing. I only reached 5'5 but that's fine for me (my sis is 5'1) My mum's side of the family always did their growing in their late teens.

If she is outgrown by little sis, tell her diamonds are better than bricks - just don't let No 2 hear you tell her;)

I remember a boy at my school who was very short. When we left aged 16 he was about my own height (5ft 4). 2 years later i bumped into him , he was about 5ft 8 or 9 by then.

Also children don't ness follow their parents height. My dad is just under 6ft. His mum is 5ft 3 and his dad was 5ft 5.

I stopped growing at the age of 12. Unfortunately for my daughters, so did they. I am 5ft and both my daughters are 5ft 2". However, it wasnt totally unexpected as we are from short stock. My eldest son stopped growing at 18, he is 5ft 8". My 15 year old son is 5ft 10 and still growing.... I might get a 6 footer out of him yet!!!

I stopped growing at the age of 21. I am 5'7" now. At school I was always one of the shortest in the class.

It seems quite variable doesn't it? She will, however, be delighted to hear that she may well have until she's 21 to do a bit more growing! She was the shortest in her class at school and is now the shortest in her group at college. I will pass the joyous news on to her and thanks to everyone for their replies!

I'm 5'2", which is a little sad as my sister is 5'8". I had to resign myself to the fact that good things come in small packages. My other half is contantly telling me that I'm the perfect height for him, which is very sweet.

  • I was 5'6 at the age of 10 and therefore always one of the tallest girls in school. It used to freak me out because my dad is 6'5 and my mum is 5 ft and she would always say "Oh you may just get to 6 foot by the time you are 15" Not exactly what one wants to hear when they already get enough stick about being taller than anyone else.

Happily I ended up staying that height until the ripe age of 22 when I found out that somewhere between 18-22 I had shot up another 3 inches :/

Speaking of the centile thingies and sorry to hijack the thread a bit. I did think about starting one but my question kind of fits in hre.

Anyway, my daughter is 8 next month (Yikes must sort out her party) her current height is 140 cm which puts her on the 99.6th. Would anybody have any idea what her weight should be?

The reason I ask is because I recently went to a parents evening and was informed by her teacher that she (my daughter not the teacher!!) is overweight and unfit.

Now unfit I will concede to a little as she loathes exercise/sport but we have just started to go swimming which she loves. But overweight I do not necessarily agree with.

She very rarely eats sweets/chocolate. She loves veggies and apples. Her only downfall is the fact she loves pizza & chips which I do limit her intake of. But she is still chubby - not fat.

Her weight is about 48Kgs (7.5 stones for those like me that can't work Kgs!)

The clothes I buy are for a 13 year old. So is she overweight? It also runs in the family that when the girls hit puberty the shoot up and look like a beanpole for the rest of their lives.

Sorry for hijacking the thread once again but any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Angela.

Based on the fact that she's 140 cm and 8 yrs, she is between the 98th and 99.6th centile. Based on that her weight should be 42 kgs.

I'm loath to rate these centiles as my is daughter at 5 yrs is tall and 'well built' for her age and weighs as much as her 9 yr old cousin who is much taller than her.

Some kids are skinny and some are chunky but I don't really think that it's the teachers job to be commenting on whether your child is overweight.

If you feel that your daughter is a little on the chubby side then the best thing in my opinion is to change the eating habits of your whole family so that she doesn't feel singled out, and encourage plenty of gentle excercise.

The good thing if you tackle the issue now is that she will find it easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle when she's a little older.
