Help with Plusnet Broadband

Hi,
Am posting on here first as reading another thread, seems there are a lot of you that can help.
I have signed up with Plusnet and my broadband went live today, I got Plusnet's wired router. I followed the router set up instructions, but have the flashing DSL light problem, followed the trouble shooting guidance which said to check the microfilter, I haven't got a spare one to do this, but am currently using this with my dial up connection, so I assume nothing is wrong with that.
This will be my first time with Broadband only ever had dial up before, so I am a bit naive. I did try to connect even with the light flashing, opened up a browser page and got taken to Thomson router speed touch set up, (is this correct, totally new to me I thought I would go straight to Plusnet and set up from there, petrified I will somehow dial another No: and run up a massive phone bill), at the end a message came up saying internet connection could not be made. Whilst this was happending my bandwidth meter was running as if I was connected to the internet, so I am extremely confused. My OS is Windows XP.
Hope this all makes sense, and any help gratefully received.
Diane

You should have had at least one ADSL filter supplied with the Thomson wireless router. You would not have been using a filter on your dial up connections, as dial up does not require an ADSL filter. Have you put a ADSL filter on all your active extensions, this includes burglar alarms, Sky boxes etc?
Then switch off the PC and router, leave one minute and restart the router, then the PC. If you can get to the Thomson router set up page, that indicates that your PC is connected OK to the router, but that your router can't connect to the internet. Check that you have enterd your Plusnet username and password (as chosen at sign up) into the router set up page, as you can't conect without doing that. Save that change and exit the router set up, then try to connect again.
There are some other settings in the router that may need to be changed, but do the above first. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Hi, not that familiar with Thomson router, understand from the Plusnet setup instructions that flashing DSL light means no ADSL connection to the exchange, try unplugging everything from your phone sockets including your dial up modem so you only have the microfilter and router connected, switch the router on and give it time and see if the DSL light comes on steady.
Set up instructions for Thomson routers are available here on the Plusnet website :-

I'm assuming the OP has uninstalled the dial up modem and it isn't trying to dial up whenver the web browser is opened?
If none of the above works then I would be suspicious that they have actually enabled the line yet for ADSL. OP, did you get a text to tell you it had gone live today?-it doesn't always happen on the day it's scheduled. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thank you all so much for the quick replies. I am using the filter that came with the router, I disabled my dial up connection when I attempted to connect with Plusnet, made sure that I had entered the correct name and password.
When you sign up you have a choice of wired or wireless router, I have a wired Thomson ST516 router.
I had an e'mail first thing this morning from Plusnet to say my Broadband was now active.
How it is set up from the phone main socket is, filter, plugged into filter is the telephone and telephone extension cable as the computer is across the room from the socket, then modem lead into telephone extension cable.
I will try again tomorrow, as originally they said it would be active after noon 2nd September.0 -
How have you got the router connected, you can only plug it into the filter you cannot plug it into a phone extension lead it is a different plug.
Edit :- The set up you describe means that you are filtering the ADSL signal out, it sounds like you are using the old modem lead to connect the router, you must use the new lead supplied with the router that plugs into the filter.
If you are using an extension lead plug that into your main phone socket then the filter into the extension lead, you will either have to move your phone or your computer, the phone and the router should then both plug directly into the filter.0 -

Sounds like you would have done better to order a wireless router from Plusnet to avoid a long trailing extension lead. However as long as you have the filter on the master socket it should be OK. Try the reboot sequence as suggested in my earlier post. If no joy call Plusnet. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I set up as cajef described, this morning, but still getting the flashing internet light. I was able to browse the internet however, but did not get asked for my login details, I have checked my usage on Plusnet and it has registered as 172.44MB (???? I was only connected for 10mins, is this right). I have gone back to dial up and taken up Plusnet's representative's kind offer to phone me, as I am not at all confident with this.0
